We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elle Fields a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Elle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My mom introduced me to the “CrossFit / HEW” world when I was nine years old. I remember the first morning I woke up to go with her, if it hadn’t been for her encouraging me to go with her when I was a kid I wouldn’t be where I am today.
That decision impacted almost every area of my life. I have always made health, wellness, and fitness a FIRST priority in my life. I know a lot of people have never been taught that or been raised the way that I was and for that I cannot thank her enough.
Health and fitness is so important and should be practiced to some degree by everyone. No one realizes how important it is until its too late (cancer, mobility issues, joint issues). Taking care of your health is the best thing you will ever do for yourself and I am so grateful that I learned that early on in life and now I am able to pass that along to many others, nothing brings me more joy.
I remember going to my first 5:30am class at HEW in Wellington FL. My mom had bribed me the night before by telling me I could get a new phone case if I woke up with her (9 year olds are easy to please).
If it weren’t for my mom’s guidance I would have also never taken up olympic weightlifting. I really love that sport and I did it for a long time and it had a huge impact on my life. I was able to travel to different states and countries competing for team USA.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Elle, I have been in the fitness industry for 12 years. I started when I was nine years old and it has been apart of my life ever since my first day at a HEW.
I fell in love with the sport of CrossFit and then olympic weightlifting after that. I did olympic weightlifting for about seven years. I competed in many different places around the US and also got to travel outside the US to compete for team USA, which is something I am very proud of as making team USA took A LOT of hard work and determination.
I now own a HEW and absolutely love it, this brand is amazing and it would only make sense for me to own one. It feels like I’m giving back to others what I was able to get from this gym and the way it changed my life.
HEW workouts are awesome because you get both cardio and weightlifting, but my favorite part- if you are a beginner, even never having been in a gym in your life, HEW is right for you. At least at my HEW, I try to make newer people feel as comfortable as possible and I think I have done a great job at that (not to toot my own horn).
Most, if not all, of my HEWmans have had amazing results with this gym. I am so proud to be able to say I have helped people become fitter, healthier, and just overall better versions of themselves. This is not a gym where you just come in to do a workout and leave, I try my best to give everyone the tools / knowledge they need to live healthier lives outside of here. Most people have no idea how to stay fit, get healthy, or even eat properly. That is why places like HEW are so necessary in this world.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
To succeed in the fitness industry I think that building relationships and loyalty with your clients is the most helpful thing you can do.
There are a million other gyms that someone can be apart of why should they stay at my gym, HEW Fitness. Something that sets our gym apart from others is that the members really feel like I / coaches care about them, which we absolutely do. ‘
We always do a community event where all members can get together and create new relationships/friendships that are built on a foundation of health, wellness, and fitness.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Managing people is not easy to do- especially when you’re 20 years old. I try to make everyone feel as comfortable as possible in my gym which includes my coaches.
I think it is very important that your people enjoy what they do and feel like they are working in a good environment. However, people will take advantage of your kindness which has happened to me multiple times- but that’s how you distinguish genuine people from the ones who will take advantage.
