Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Elle Buell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Elle, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most exciting projects I’ve worked on recently was my song “Holy Trinity”. I wrote this song back in 2021, at a time when I was really unsure of myself as an artist. I brought the idea to my co-writer/producer, ANTi, half as a joke. We just went with it. The song was so fun to write and really helped me tap into a persona that I didn’t know I had. “Holy Trinity” is a campy, sarcastic, social commentary, and it has resonated with way more people than I ever anticipated. I feel like the song really helped me find my community as an artist.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The first time I ever sang in front of anyone was at a camp talent show in 3rd grade. I had prepared to sing “Listen” by Beyonce. However, in true Elle fashion, I panicked once I got on stage and instead sang the Oscar Mayer Weiner Jingle. You know, the one that goes “My Bologna has a first name…” It took me a few more years before I could muster up the courage to try performing again, but by the time I was in high school I knew singing and songwriting were two paths I wanted to pursue.
I didn’t know anyone in the music industry, or how to make a career of it myself, so I went to Community College of Philadelphia and studied vocal performance before transferring to City College of New York to study Jazz. I’m so proud to be a CCP Alum, I really cut my teeth performing at various bars and events with the CCP Jazz Band and it was one of the best learning experiences I could have asked for. It taught me how to communicate with a band, and how to share a stage with other artists.
I left college and started taking writing trips to Nashville, where I eventually moved in 2021. I still wasn’t quite sure how the whole industry worked so I wrote with anyone and everyone. Eventually I found a great
group of collaborators and release my first single “1 Man” in July of 2022. I now have my third single set to release on October 27th. The song is called “Party Girl”. I co-wrote this song on acoustic guitar and then brought it to my producer ARRO, who helped bring my Y2K- Ashlee Simpson- Hannah Montana dreams to life. The song is a total pop-rock banger and I can’t wait for it to be out in the world!
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Be kind and be curious.
Try to keep an open mind, and remember that just because someone’s art isn’t resonating with you, that doesn’t mean it’s “bad”. Growing up my mom always told me “Everyone has something to teach you” and I like to think that applies to art as well.
If you really pay attention to what someone is saying with a song, you can learn something. Instead of writing off an artist or deciding “I don’t like that”, try to find something to appreciate in it. It could be their production, or their writing, or their vocal arrangement, but if you can learn to appreciate it as something unique and special it will go a long way in nurturing creatives, and make you a better artist or aesthete.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is seeing how people receive the songs. I remember playing an unreleased song to a group of women a few months ago. The song is called “In The Room” and it touches on sexism and sexual harassment in the music industry. None of the women I was playing the song for worked in music. One woman was an ER nurse, another a teacher, another a retired army veteran. All of the women told me how much they related to this song and told stories of their own similar experiences in the workplace. I think it’s really special that music can bring us together like that and let us know that we’re not alone.
