We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ella Clover. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ella below.
Ella, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Growing up, I spent every day acting, singing, and dancing. I don’t think I realized how lucky I was in that regard until really recently. Every single day was my own personal artist retreat and I didn’t even realize it. In rural Pennsylvania, I had no distractions- just green trees, rolling hills, and silence. I was always so curious about everything, and I had the time and space to really ponder! I kept asking questions and coming up with crazy stories to deal with the uncertainty of it all.
My town had a wonderful community theatre that I was involved with from the 3rd grade. My genesis moment stems from my summers spent there. Not just my time onstage though…building sets, being goofy backstage. I realized early on that my passion lies in being surrounded by creatively engaged individuals working together to create something beautiful, impossible to fully communicate – something that can never be replicated. Theatre was my first real sense of community, purpose, hopefulness. Of course I wanted to dedicate my life to the arts.

Ella, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an actress and filmmaker. I started in theatre and made my way to film.
Most of my work lives with the production company I have with Joey Povinelli, jpeg Productions. Our work is colorful, bold, and anachronistic. We utilize practical effects, embrace camp, and adore the grotesque. We’re inspired by John Waters, David Lynch, and Harmony Korine.
We just completed our most exciting work yet, “Interitus Adfectus.” It’s a short film about a graduate student who cultivates a new breed of mushroom that takes over her entire apartment and destroys her life from the inside out.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to experience everything. Soak up every moment. I want to always be present and always be learning.
There is no better creative way for me to do this than stepping into a role. Acting cultivates new understanding, empathy. You’re forced to listen, and be in the present moment.
I love bringing people together. It is gratifying to put artists together and watch them create something that would never have existed otherwise.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Storytelling is a sacred tradition. Artists have the duty to carry it on. Artists create spaces that foster discussion, empathy, connection. And a lot of the time it’s also really fun!!
