We were lucky to catch up with Elizabeth Urabe recently and have shared our conversation below.
Elizabeth, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
Unquestionably THE defining moment in my professional AND personal life to date was November 8, 2011, when I was awarded one of three first place honors of the then unprecedented American Batik Design Competition, organized earlier that year by (then) Ambassador Dino Patti Djalal of the Indonesian embassy.
Indonesia is rightly extremely proud of all Her artistic achievements. But they are proudest of all of their Batik, which in 2009 had been honored and recognized by UNESCO as the finest Batik on the planet.
Batik is a painstaking process of waxing and dyeing that dates back more than 4000 years in Indonesia. Every single aspect of the process, a labor of love in every sense of the term, is 100% hand done; from the drawing onto the fabric of the design to be batiked to the time consuming process of applying melted wax to cover certain parts of the design until the dye has been applied to the parts that remain visible. The tradition and guidelines required are very specific and almost set in stone. When Ambassador Dino conceived the idea for the competition, which invited American designers to submit their work for consideration, his goal was to further the knowledge and understanding worldwide of the pure magic and sublime power inherent in the Art of Indonesian Batik.
When I first heard about the competition I had no prior conscious knowledge of either batik or Indonesia. All I knew was that batik was a textile and over the years since I had started channeling the body of art now known as Urabe Spirit Art, one comment I received frequently from people who viewed it was that “it would make beautiful fabric”.
So when the proverbial bell went off in my head, I watched in awe as my mind scanned the 450 or so pictures I had done to date and settled immediately on one channeled in December of 1995, less than a year after I began birthing the art.
It’s title was DIVINE UNITY.
The DIVINE UNITY broke two of the fundamental rules of Indonesian Batik because, unlike the other hundred or so artists who submitted designs and had spent decades of their lives studying the intricacies of what makes Batik so special and unique in Indonesia, I was a completely untrained artist who only knew that I HAD to enter the DIVINE UNITY in this competition and that it would win.
So on that evening of November 8, 2011, sitting with bated breath at my table in the Palace Hotel waiting as they began to announce the winners, I was already well aware that history was in the making AND that humanity was about to take a huge step forward in ushering in a New Earth.
The three third place winners were announced. Then the three second place winners. My partner, ever good for a chuckle in tense situations, turned to me and said:
“We’ll, either they forgot you or YOU DID IT!!”
That evening was the first full confirmation of what I had known in my heart and soul from the moment that I first began doodling with colored pencils…that Urabe Spirit Art was destined to change the very course of humanity on planet Earth. It was the proudest and happiest, most rewarding day of my life to date.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
In 1985 I had a date with divine destiny in the form of a mysterious meeting with my Spiritual Master, a Guru from India. This reunion of Master and disciple put me firmly on a path on where guidance organically emerged from within and I spent the next decade going through a rigorous process of purification and multi level strengthening which involved fine tuning my daily discipline and making sure that my commitment to what I had come to do was intact.
In January 1995, coinciding with a three month course I had started called The Artist’s Way, I spontaneously began to draw. I had never been an artist and never really had interest in being one but since I was doing a course designed to help me discover and recover my latent creativity, I figured I’d buy some colored pencils and BE creative…
The childlike scribblings quickly evolved into highly complex designs done in water base art pens and over the course of the next four years I channeled 450 of these “spirit children”. I was at the drawing table literally 6-8 hours a day, seven days a week, and each time I would try to rest, I would feel the energy of a new picture wanting to be born through me, very much akin to childbirth. If I tried to stand over a finished picture and admire it, I would FEEL hundreds more spirit children “fighting” over who was going to be next in line to make its grand entrance onto planet earth. Needless to say this was exhausting, exhilarating and ultimately, humbling, as over time I came to profoundly understand what these pictures were and what they had come to do.
One thing I knew unequivocally from day 1 was that the birthing of Urabe Spirit Art was an event of both cosmic and universal proportions. And that it would not be until the world AND I were fully ready for it to be truly global that anything significant would happen on the “business” front. So I waited, sometimes patiently, for years wondering if the day would ever come when “the world would shake its head and say, Beth knew all along…” (A quote from an Urabe Family of Divine Origin member).
In May of last year a series of events culminated in the launch of the URABE OFFICIAL website, an online store featuring more than 800 diverse divine products in every form imaginable. Each and every product is energetically empowered to assist in the spiritual processes of awakening, healing and transforming and reintegration of old energies, precisely because this is what I opened to and received over the decades of giving birth to the art. URABE is unprecedented, unparalleled and unsurpassed in its EMBODIED divine presence in the world.
But even this website, spectacular as it IS, is only the tip of the iceberg as far as what lies ahead. Even I myself, the one most intimate with the art and its unique energies and destiny, am aware that I don’t really have a clue what lies only a heartbeat away.
So join me, dear ones, in fastening your seatbelts and getting ready to say YES to the adventure of lifetimes.
The time is NOW.
Let’s do this.
Grandma Beth
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
EVERYTHING that has emerged from my journey revolving around Urabe Spirit Art has been completely inspired by Grace. My business partner, a brilliant young woman from India, came to spend an evening at my Airbnb mountain top retreat in northern Arizona and even though we barely had any direct contact during that stay, something in both of us knew already that our meeting was predestined. Fast forward two and a half years and she returned to the mountain for a week of much needed retreat. The first morning of her stay we went up on the stargazing deck of the retreat house and I did an ancient Sanskrit chant that has been part of my daily discipline for decades and she sat in meditation as I chanted.
When the chant was over we sat in silence for a few minutes. And then she slowly opened her eyes and said that, as she absorbed the divine energies from the syllables and my voice, she’d had crystal clear and concrete visions of the life’s work we’d been BORN to do together. Not only that but she even “saw” the compost toilet for which that I was just getting ready to have an outhouse built to house 🤣.
For me, that was probably the clincher. If she was pure enough to see the future outhouse, she HAD to be my girl.
Long story short we never looked back and our hearts and minds rejoined in the timeless space of Love… ready to do what we were born to do in awakening, healing and transforming our planet.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your firm or practice?
I didn’t. I am going on 62 years of age and I’ve never had a “real” job. No, I’m not from a wealthy family and the only time I ever earned and had money to spare, it was used in the building of the sacred mountain top retreat I mentioned in my response to the previous question.
I have lived a life of pure faith, devotion and love, every step and breath fueled by Grace. My underlying conviction has always been that what I NEEDED (not necessarily what I wanted…) in the way of money would be there WHEN I needed it. And not once has the universe ever let me down or left me hanging when I was ready to make my move forward.
