Elizabeth, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later?

I have found that everything in life happens exactly when it is supposed to! As a college graduate in 1992, the travel industry appealed to me. I considered a job as a flight attendant or even working with a travel agency, until a friend told me about the lucrative income in radio sales, not to mention the perks. After ten years and three children, I discovered the demanding after hours schedule was no longer fun. I exited the radio station, co-owned, then owned an advertising agency until 2018, when I opened Cairn Travels. It’s funny how life redirects and I wouldn’t change the timing of the adventure at all.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?

My Dad was a high school history teacher and one of the perks was being able to take students to Europe in the summer. Mom, my sister, and I were able to tag along on some of the adventures. My parents instilled a love of travel which made me yearn to learn more about the world I had yet to see.

As my three boys grew older, we began to enjoy lots of family vacations, which reignited my appetite for travel. I also began planning trips for friends. I am fortunate to have a career doing what I love most; planning vacations and traveling as much as possible!

Just as my parents instilled a love of travel in me, it seems that my husband and I have successfully done the same to our boys. Our oldest graduated from college and is currently headed to Oregon on a month long cross country driving tour to begin his future. Just last week, we watched our middle son fly away to study in Bristol, England for the next three years.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?

Current clients! Cairn Travels clients have been thrilled with my services and refer me to their friends and family.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

I opened Cairn Travels in 2019, had a successful start, was planning great itineraries and then the world shut down. My first clients were headed to Venice, Italy in April 2020. As you recall, Italy was the first European country to be affected, and that first trip had to be canceled. My new business was closed before it got started.

Today, business is great and I am forever grateful for the quiet time those years provided my family and me. I utilized my free time to create and develop fantastic partnerships with hotels, travel advisors, adventure companies and tour guides.
