We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Elizabeth Moreno. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Elizabeth below.
Hi Elizabeth, thanks for joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I am definitely much happier as a business owner! I sometimes wonder if I should have stayed at my 9-5 job, and even currently. I’ll be honest, I have the thought often since I am not as busy as I would like to be in my business and I still wonder, even after a year in business if I made the right decision but then I remember how tough this year has been for my husband and I. I remember how lucky I am to be my own boss and have that flexibility in not just everyday life but in a family emergency like what we had and I was able to take the time off without having to worry about asking/begging anyone. I work part-time at a corporate chain a couple of days a week and I’ve realized it’s really not for me whatsoever and will just strive to better my clientele in my brow studio.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Well, my name is Elizabeth but most know me as Liz. I am 30 y/o, married to my wonderful husband, and we have 2 fur babies. My love for esthetics and the beauty industry came to me by accident per my sister actually. You know as a teen I had a a love for makeup and wanted to be a makeup artist for a living, (which I did for a year), but I realized I still love makeup for myself just not on clients. It never felt like a niche to me. Since beauty school, I’ve had an interest in waxing: the body and face. After starting my first job out of school as an esthetician I was doing facials but we also offered facial waxing at a brow bar and watching them was what made me fall in love with eyebrows and the shaping art of it. Up until a couple years ago, I was finally given that same brow bar job that I fell in love with shaping and waxing brows. Since then I’ve opened my own brow studio and I’ll be honest it’s been hard and it’s a lot of work but I wouldn’t change it especially given the year we’ve had this year. My clients come to me knowing they can enjoy their me time, relax, and have a safe space at their appointments. I offer my clients brow/facial waxing, tinting, lamination, facials, etc. I want people to know that my business is about kindness, love, and accepting all kinds of people all while making you feel more beautiful.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
At the time I was exclusively pretty much just doing facials at the place I worked. I had started waxing eyebrows on the side so that I wouldn’t lose any skill. make a bit of extra money, and get a little clientele doing that, so I would do house call appointments. I reached out about a potential job doing brows, called, got an interview, and eventually offered the job which I was so excited for. I was at the job for almost a year when I was put in a position to leave that job or start my own business and I made the jump, found a salon suite and I have been open for almost 2 years now which I am incredibly grateful for but I continue to look for more opportunity and room to grow my business, clientele, and myself.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I’m not sure if it’s so much lesson or just unlearning this trait but I had to stop being a people pleaser and start saying no. As long as I can remember I’ve always felt like I had to say yes to be a good person but as I’ve gotten older I realized that I can say no and still be a good person. I learned this when I was working in the corporate store world where they expect your whole life to revolve around your job but it got to a point where I had to stop because they expected it like a habit and like bad habits you have to cut them.
