We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elizabeth Mireles a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Elizabeth, thanks for joining us today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
My advice would be to take a leap of faith. “There is uncertainty about what lies on the other side but it is better than the certainty of stagnation.” If I could start over, I would take a leap of faith and believe in myself. It took me years to do so. My story began in high school. I applied into a cosmetology program and got accepted my freshman year. I would say about 50+ other girls got accepted with me, however out of those girls only 25 were to move on to the sophomore level and take the next steps to getting their license. I was not picked to be one of those 25. I was so devastated and continued my high school years with no hope to continue my education in the beauty industry. I looked into schools after graduation, but tuition was much more than I could afford at the time. People would often tell me it was for the best, that I should go into a more “traditional” profession because I would be more likely to succeed in that than cosmetology. I gave in and went into education. Beauty was always my side job, hobby, and part time. As time went by, I knew deep down education wasn’t my true passion. 6 years later, I finally took that leap of faith and quit education. If I could do things differently, I wouldn’t have let fear and doubt take control telling me “I won’t make it”. I wouldn’t have listened to those who thought this couldn’t be “a real job”. But nevertheless, being in education has taught me so many things, my students have taught me so much and I will carry those lessons and memories with me forever. If you truly have a passion for something, take that risk and believe in yourself. It is never in vain, you will come out of the journey having gained invaluable lessons and the strength to weather new storms.

Elizabeth, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been a makeup artist for 7 years now, but recently I have taken a huge step forward to further my education and enrolled in Esthetician School. My passion has always been helping others in a genuine and authentic way and with my career, I am able to do that. I want to help them feel confident in their own skin. Whether that may be in a makeup application service, facial treatment, or hair removal. Enhancing the natural beauty of every client that comes my way is what sets me apart in the industry. Every service provided is customized to be as unique as the client. When my clients are satisfied with my work AND we also build a great relationship; that is what fuels my passion. I specialize in makeup application for all events, facial treatments, body waxing, and brow lamination.
I am most proud of going through cosmetology school and pursuing what I’ve loved for so many years.
When it comes down to it, I think ultimately, it’s about helping people not only to feel good about themselves but to instill confidence and beauty so that they feel prepared to take on anything and everything. Empowering women and building a strong community – it’s so much more than just makeup and facials.
I’m excited to keep learning and perfecting my skills and craft! If you’re looking for a makeup artist or esthetician in the DFW area look no further! I hope to see you soon!

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Consistency. In today’s world, social media is one of the most effective ways to grow your clientele. Being consistent on your social media platforms will allow you to showcase your work and build connections. It’s also important to put yourself out there, people like to see the face behind the business. The more you build those connections, even if small, the more likely you will attract potential clients. Most importantly, always be true to yourself and genuinely care about your clients. Never compromise your integrity. I think these things are key to grow your clientele.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn is working 24/7 will bring you success. This is not true. When you overwork yourself, overbook yourself, it can take a toll on your mental health. If you are not doing okay, you can’t give your best to your clients. I had to learn this the hard way. I had to learn to take breaks. I had to learn to say no. Sometimes I would often feel guilty saying no to clients but eventually I learned that I needed to be okay first to be able to preform my very best. Pour into your own cup once in a while. Finding balance is what will truly help you succeed.
