We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elizabeth Miller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Elizabeth , appreciate you joining us today. We’re complete cheeseballs and so we love asking folks to share the most heartwarming moment from their career – do you have a touching moment you can share with us?
I am grateful that I get to work in a professional setting where I get to see people heal. During my time in working in psychiatric hospitals, I mostly saw people who were very ill and I rarely got to see people fully heal. However, now that I have been in private practice for many years, I have the honor of witnessing people put in the work to heal. The most heartwarming stories for me are when I get to see people go from really suffering to living a life that they have always wanted. Oftentimes, traumatic events, chronic illnesses and grief can bring us to our knees and lead us through difficult times. It is an honor for me to get to join my clients on their journey towards healing and witness them heal and rebuild.
I recently have had a few former clients reach out and update me on how they are doing. One client in particular, who had previously struggled with debilitating depression and anxiety and had decided to leave school of focus on their mental health, reached out to let me know they recently graduated with their Master’s Degree and are working in their dream job.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always been interested in the mind-body connection. When I was completing my undergraduate degree at Texas Tech University, I was drawn to studying the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and chronic health issues. I became passionate about understanding why some people were able to overcome mental and physical health issues while others continued to suffer. Early in my career, while working in addiction recovery services, I quickly noticed that clients who worked through their previous traumas in conjunction with other lifestyle factors, experienced deeper and more sustained healing. I dove deeper into the research and made it my mission to learn anything I could about how the brain and body were interconnected.
I went on to receive a Master’s of Education Degree in Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology and a Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine with specializations in Integrative Mental Health and Clinical Hypnosis.
Well Mind Body was born out of the deep need for integrative psychotherapy and wellness services. After years of working in emergency psychiatric, addiction recovery, schools and private practice settings, I found that people were seeking a more integrative approach to mental health and mind-body healing. We know that the mind, body and spirit are all interconnected, so why weren’t our mental health services incorporating an integrative approach? Well Mind Body exists to fill that need and provide integrative psychotherapy & wellness services to people who are looking to find optimal health and wellness.
Our clinicians offer individual, couples and group psychotherapy, clinical hypnosis, integrative wellness coaching, functional lab work and individual nutrigenomic and pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing. Our integrative approach allows us to treat mental health concerns from an integrative. bio-individual perspective.
My personal specialties include compassion focused trauma recovery, perinatal and maternal mental health, chronic health conditions, nervous system dysregulation & re-regulation, gut brain health, and clinical hypnosis. I also offer clinical supervision to licensed professional counselor associates.
Have you ever had to pivot?
As I look back over the course of my career, I can think of many times where I needed to pivot personally and professionally. I have owned my own practice since 2018 and since then have had three children, moved office locations, re-branded my company and lived through a global pandemic.
In 2020, I decided that I wanted to move into a new office space and offer more integrative services to my clients, in addition to psychotherapy services. I saw so many people suffering from chronic health conditions and with the global pandemic, I wanted to continue to help people with their overall health and wellness. I had many people tell me it was too risky to open a new office and offer new services during a global pandemic. But in the end, that pivot was one of the best decisions I could have ever made. Our new space became a place where people could come and heal. We have created a wonderful community of therapists and health coaches.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Yes, if I could go back, I do believe I would be an integrative psychotherapist again. I am grateful that I get to wake up everyday and sit across from people who are working so hard to improve their lives. It is an honor to work with clients and join them on their journey towards healing.
My specialties have evolved over the years as a result of my own lived experience, passions and trainings. While I would never wish trauma or a chronic health condition on anyone, I know my own lived experiences have led me right to where I need to be and have also allowed me to genuinely connect with my clients.
