We recently connected with Elizabeth Marrero and have shared our conversation below.
Elizabeth, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
When I was deciding what I wanted to do for “the rest of my life”, I thought of all things creative! I was told those weren’t careers or ways to make money. After that, I started seeing those creative avenues boom, especially with the rise of social media! I’m now investing the time and funds to cultivate my creative skills and urge anyone, whether just starting out or slowing down into mature years, to invest in their skills. It’s not a hobby, it’s a skill and calling you are uniquely designed with and your voice is needed!
Elizabeth, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have the privilege of living a life that reveals the beauty of God through various creative means.
I loved growing up in a very musical and creative family. We had a piano in the house we could always hear with beautiful singing. Art was always being created around me. It was completely normal to see new masterpieces!
I started drawing and creating art in my own style when a friend’s mom said I was doing fashion design. I had never heard of that before! I’ve been designing since, taking Fashion Design courses, and learning how to make garments.
There was a time I felt led to study the Bible in search of fashion. To my surprise, I found so much that I wrote a book! It became a bestseller on Etsy and sold out a few times. It’s now being published worldwide on February 9th of this year (in time for NY Fashion Week)! It’s called “FASHION: Holy. Sacred. Pure.”
I learned that the clothes we wear speaks of who we are to others before we can talk. But first of all, it’s a message to ourselves, a self-talk. And who better to speak about our identity than our Creator? This is what the book is about: how God sees us and the truths He speaks about our identity through the clothes we wear.
I’m also a singer/songwriter, sharing about God’s love through deep, introspective words. I love to write songs based on inspirational stories or some from the Bible and put it to a hip hop/theatrical fusion.
Oil painting is my way of praying for others. As I paint, I am in constant intercession and prayer for whoever I am painting or the theme. For example, one of my more popular paintings is of Johnny Depp that I painted during his court case. I prayed for the right outcome as I created the painting, and also interceded for any other victims of domestic violence.
Any way that I can reveal the beauty of God through creative means and inspire others to do so, I’m there!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love being a messenger of God through art. I see what’s happening in society and I ask God what He thinks. Then I ponder on the best way to communicate this to others. Will it be a song, a painting, a fashion design, a story, book, or social media post? In this way, I see it not just as a hobby, but a calling.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Some may think they are not creative simply because they don’t paint, draw, make music, dance, etc. This is far from the truth — we are each creative! This is because we were made in the image of God, who made everything. We are, like fingerprints, each unique in the way that we are creative. Some have genius business ideas or ways to market. Others have creative ways of managing a household or fixing things. If you think you’re not creative, think again =)
