We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elizabeth King a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Elizabeth, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Sleep Baby was born out of a desire to help parents feel confident and supported while teaching their child independent sleep habits. We don’t just focus on how to sleep train a baby, we truly invest in our families and want everyone to experience rest and growth as we work together. One of the things we are passionate about is that a healthy parent equals a healthy baby. If you are parenting out of anxiety, post partum depression, stress, or exhaustion, you aren’t going to be able to be the parent your baby needs. Sleep helps all of those things! We believe it is important to support parents’ needs as much as the babies’ needs even during a physically challenging and busy season of life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Sleep Baby Consulting is an infant and toddler sleep consulting firm. We work with parents from before birth to 5 years old to teach their little ones lasting, independent sleep habits. This looks different for every family so we do this through 1-on-1 consultations with one of our certified sleep consultants. The consultant and family meet to talk about what is happening with their child’s sleep and develop a custom plan to help their little one fall asleep on their own, sleep all night (or what is an age appropriate length), and take great naps. With infants this can look like teaching independence in how they fall asleep, safe sleep habits, or extending naps. For toddlers we may be coaching parents around reducing bedtime stalling, transitioning to a big kid bed, or stopping early morning wakeups.
Sleep Baby was started in 2017 and our team has grown from just me to a team of 6 consultants and we are still growing now! As a first time mom, I knew my husband and I wouldn’t be able to function without sleep and was determined to figure out how to get good sleep with a baby. Spoiler, we did not, in fact, get great sleep for awhile. But, along that journey, I learned a LOT and also had several incredible friends who supported me, gave suggestions, and answered frantic texts about if my baby was broken. As time went on, I was able to give that gift back to other friends and the idea for Sleep Baby began to take shape. I realized that there were many parents out there who were exhausted and didn’t know how to make a change. As I learned more about the sleep consulting industry, I decided to dive in!
In 5 years we have worked with thousands of families around the world and I am incredibly proud of all of those sleeping babies! Our methods are customized to each family and we support you as you implement them. My team goes above and beyond providing text, email, and phone support to troubleshoot as families teach their babies and toddlers how to get the rest their body needs. Just like adults, sleep is as vital to a baby’s body as food and the usually aren’t getting enough of it! We want to change that in a way that is empowering to parents and helps families enjoy each other more because they aren’t exhausted.
How’d you meet your business partner?
This year Ensley and Temoh Nesbitt joined me as partners in Sleep Baby and we are working together to grow Sleep Baby even more. Ensley started with Sleep Baby a few years ago as one of my consultants and I knew immediately that she had even more to offer. As we worked together, she was always innovating with her clients and suggesting ways that we could improve our offering. She also was currently a business owner with Temoh.
Additionally, as the business had grown, I felt too stretched thin between working with families and focusing on the back end of Sleep Baby. I felt like I was constantly treading water and the growth strategies I had were never able to get off the ground because I didn’t’ have the bandwith to actually work on them. Adding Ensley and Temoh to the leadership team has given us the ability to grow strategically and to make sure nothing gets dropped! Our services have improved and movement towards our goals actually has the space to happen.
Any advice for managing a team?
I think it is important to make your team feel valuable. In a business where everyone is remote, it can be easy to get heads down and for everyone to work in their own silos. A quick email telling someone they are doing a great job or a meeting where you give out prizes always helps team members feel valuable and not alone. Along those lines, I think that regular communication between the team, especially if you are not in an office together, builds so much. You want to forge some friendships with your coworkers, and using a tool like voxer or monthly video meetings can do that!
