Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Elizabeth Kaul Thach . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Elizabeth , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, what do you think about family businesses? Would you want your children or other family members to one day join your business?
Steve and I both come from families made up of small business owners. My dad was a self-employed manufacturing consultant for a majority of my childhood, about 17 years. For the last 10 years, my family has run a haunted house attraction in the East Valley, Sanctum of Horror. Additionally, Steve’s Dad is an electrician who has owned his own electrical company for about 17 years. Starting our own business didn’t feel like anything out of the ordinary to us because it’s what we’ve both seen modeled for us by our hardworking parents all of our lives. It’s inspiring to literally see these ideas our parents had on paper come to fruition. When we talked about starting Moboho, it just felt like a natural thing to do. We were meticulous and well calculated because we’ve seen and lived what it takes to start a business. We are so lucky to have had such great role models!

Elizabeth , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Liz and along with my husband, Steve, we run Moboho Events. We are an event rental and styling company. From weddings, private dinner parties, baby showers, and everything in between, we are excited to help people bring their vision for their event to life with our carefully curated collection of dinnerware, decor, backdrops, and lounge sets. I have always loved decorating and hosting events and parties. Whether it’s an art deco New Year’s Eve Bash or a Pool Party Fiesta I just love to put together details to bring a party to life.
Moboho started after we had our own personal, small, intimate wedding in December of 2020. Steve and I hired a company to totally deck out our wedding day. I was so impressed and in awe of how it turned out. Every detail was so carefully arranged and created such a vibe for our evening. It was so magical. I just felt this impulsive urge to get involved in the event industry and hopefully create that same feeling for someone else on their special day.
I had just finished graduated with my Doctorate in Occupational Therapy, so I was a little hesitant to open up the door on a whole new part of my work like when I was just starting to settle in to being a pediatric therapist. I really had a desire to incorporate some creativity into my life though, so slowly but surely we began to collect each of our pieces to eventually build up the Moboho Catalog!
Since officially launching in May of 2021, we’ve been involved in numerous weddings, showers, dinner parties, and styled shoots with colleagues. We have continued to build up our collection of decor pieces and plan to continue to do so as we scale up our weddings accordingly.
We are so appreciative of the support and business we’ve received from friends, family, and out amazing clients who have reached out and chosen us to be a part of their special moments in life. I hope they can see and feel the energy and thoughtfulness that goes into each of their designs to make their big day that much more special. We are still learning to balance this new part of our lives but it has introduced us to some amazing people and given us so much freedom to flex our creativity.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
We knew going into Moboho that we didn’t ever want to be in debt when starting a business. Fortunately, with our style of business, we were able to slowly save up money to purchase rental items piece by piece to eliminate the need for huge upfront costs. Both Steve and I still work our 9-5 jobs full time during the build up, so that supplemented buying new pieces. Now that we have been working events, new item are payed for out of the profits we see from those events. We are proud and feel fortunate to say we didn’t have to touch a credit card or take out a loan to start out business. This did take us a bit longer to fully ramp up though.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
We have several strategies for growing our clientele. We have partnerships as preferred vendors for several venues and wedding planners in the valley. They kindly refer clients out way in exchange for a small discount to clients if they book with us. We also participate in the Arizona Wedding Show. We love this opportunity because we get to meet real potential clients face to face and show off our work in person. We do get some work of mouth from previous brides we’ve worked with to their friends who are currently planning weddings. Lastly, we participate in styled shoots to get beautiful photos of our inventory as well as network with other vendors in the industry.
