We were lucky to catch up with Elizabeth Figueroa recently and have shared our conversation below.
Elizabeth , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Photography wasn’t something I grew up knowing I would do. It started as a passion and slowly became a career through a lot of trial and error, practice, and determination. I learned by investing in education, studying other photographers’ work, watching tutorials, taking courses, and most importantly, getting behind the camera as often as possible. Every session taught me something new.
Looking back, I think I could have accelerated my growth by seeking mentorship earlier. There is so much value in learning from someone who has already walked the path you’re trying to take. It would have helped me avoid some mistakes and gain confidence sooner.
The most essential skills weren’t just technical ones like lighting, posing, and editing. Communication, patience, and the ability to connect with people have been just as important. My clients trust me with some of the most meaningful moments of their lives, and creating a comfortable experience is just as valuable as creating beautiful images.
One of the biggest obstacles was self-doubt. Starting a business in a new place and building a client base from scratch was intimidating. Balancing motherhood, family life, and entrepreneurship also came with challenges. There were moments when growth felt slow, but I kept showing up, learning, and improving. Today, I’m grateful for every obstacle because each one helped shape both the photographer and the person I’ve become.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Elizabeth Figueroa, and I am the owner and photographer behind Elizabeth Figueroa Photography, based in Katy, Texas. I was born and raised in El Salvador, and my journey to becoming a full-time photographer is a story of faith, perseverance, and following my heart even when the path wasn’t clear.
When I first moved to Texas, I never imagined that photography would become my career. What started as a creative passion slowly grew into a business that now allows me to serve families throughout the Houston area. Today, I specialize in maternity, newborn, family, milestone, graduation, and children’s portrait photography. My goal is not simply to take beautiful photographs, but to preserve moments that families will treasure for generations.
As a wife, mother, immigrant, and business owner, I understand how quickly life changes. Children grow, families evolve, and milestones pass by in the blink of an eye. Photography gives us the opportunity to pause time for just a moment and hold onto those memories forever. That is the problem I help solve for my clients—I help them preserve the moments they never want to forget.
What sets my brand apart is the experience I create. I want every client who walks into my studio or meets me at a session to feel comfortable, valued, and celebrated. Many people feel nervous in front of a camera, but I focus on creating a relaxed environment where genuine emotions can shine through. Some of my favorite images are the unplanned moments—the laughter, the hugs, the tears of joy, and the authentic connections between loved ones.
My photography style combines timeless elegance with emotion. Whether I’m photographing an expecting mother, a newborn baby, or a family celebrating a milestone, I want each image to feel meaningful and personal. I believe portraits should not only be beautiful today but still feel beautiful decades from now.
One of my proudest accomplishments is building a successful business from the ground up while raising a family. There were moments when I doubted myself, but every challenge helped shape the photographer and entrepreneur I am today. I’m especially proud that many of my clients return year after year and trust me to document their most important milestones.
If there is one thing I want people to know about me and my brand, it’s that photography is never just about the pictures. It’s about preserving stories, celebrating life’s seasons, and creating memories that become part of a family’s legacy. Every family has a story worth telling, and it is an honor to be the person trusted to tell it.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Creatively, I am constantly striving to grow—not only as a photographer but as an artist and storyteller. I want every session to feel meaningful, every client to feel seen, and every image to carry emotion that lasts far beyond the moment it was taken.
At the heart of everything I do is connection. If my work helps a family relive a cherished memory, feel proud of their journey, or pass those moments down to future generations, then I have accomplished exactly what I set out to do.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
As a photographer, I also had to unlearn the idea that perfection is what makes an image meaningful. Early on, I focused heavily on technical perfection. Over time, I realized that the photographs people treasure most are often the ones filled with genuine emotion, connection, and real moments. A perfect pose may be beautiful, but a genuine smile, a child’s laugh, or a parent’s embrace is unforgettable.
Today, I embrace progress over perfection. I have learned to trust the process, take risks, and believe in my ability to figure things out along the way. That mindset has helped me grow not only as a business owner and photographer but also as a person.
