We recently connected with Elizabeth Evans and have shared our conversation below.
Elizabeth, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success can look different to everyone. To succeed, you need to measure your success based on your standards and not what success is to anyone else. Your definition of success might eventually change as your business and life goals do.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I launched Elizabeth Evans Styling, a personal wardrobe and closet edit company, in January of 2024. I have a creative background in different occupations including photography and interior design assistant, educator, event planner, nanny, prop/costume stylist, and retail management. All of these interesting jobs kept me afloat while I advanced in my career as an actor and musician here in Dallas Texas. I hit a pressure point in the fall of 2023 when I found myself in a full-time non-profit job, costuming actors for commercials and fielding requests for personal styling. With help from a friend, I decided to use all of my skills to do the thing I love: making people feel great in what they wear, how they present themselves to the world, and how to make their closets work for them and not against them.
It is a common problem with our closets; we get busy in the day-to-day chaos, and our systems to keep our clothes organized become the last thing on our minds. Actually, it’s one of the first things on our minds, however, for most people, it is this overwhelming, daunting task that haunts us. This is where I step in. I help you decide what to keep and what no longer serves you.
With personal styling, the majority of my clients are in a transitional period in their lives, and their clothing no longer reflects their personality, or they want to incorporate new trends, but it feels overwhelming when fads change fast. I want to lead clients to pieces that make them feel their absolute best. What you wear is personal, and I treat it that way.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I am still building my audience on social media! I love Instagram and, on some days, loathe it. I let go of watching followers rise and then drop because that will drive anyone nuts. I try to have fun with it and use it as a marketing tool to help advance my business. You have to find the right balance between strategy and fun.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I never fit the 9-5 office career. I tried, with several failed attempts. I always worked best when it was a job I had a little more freedom and creativity in. When I look back on my untraditional career path, I always knew this. I remember having a conversation with my grandmother in college when I was struggling with making post-college decisions, and she said, “I don’t think you are an office kind of gal.” And she was absolutely right. Her voice pops into my mind when I start to question if I made the right choices along the way or if I am on the right track. It might not make sense to someone who has had the traditional career trajectory but I had to follow my own path.
