Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Elizabeth Eiss. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Elizabeth, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Thank you, I’m so glad to join you! So in a nutshell, we’re talent matchmakers. My company, ResultsResourcing, is THE freelance job platform that comes with YOUR own recruiter. The inspiration was my own need to hire quality freelance talent. In essence, I was my own first client. I was hiring superb freelancers for my consulting projects and my clients kept asking me to find them similar freelancers, as they were rarely successful hiring contractor on a DIY basis themselves. I did this for them and realized along the way, this was an important service that would help businesses grow and scale using flexible talent. This was in 2015-2017, so long before Covid and remote work.
I was solving a problem in a way no one else was solving. The DIY platforms (then and now) don’t offer solopreneurs and small & mid-sized business any human help with contract hiring. I was sure that if I designed and built the technology and workflow right, I could offer high touch human help through a high tech platform, cost effectively. That’s what I did with our team: ResultsResourcing.
So, my mission is to empower purpose. We help organizations achieve THEIR purpose by matching them with curated freelancers who can add value and accelerate their timeline to mission success. At the same time, the matched freelance pro is empowered too, working with quality clients and rewarding work.
The most rewarding part of my role is helping others operationalize the path to achieving their goals. As Thomas Drucker famously said, “Do what you do best, and outsource the rest.” We help businesses focus on their core work and align them with freelance talent best-suited for the work those businesses can outsource. In doing so, our clients truly achieve more, deliver more value to their clients and spend their time doing what is most enriching to them.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Well, it was a circuitous route to today! Earlier in my career, I worked in the truly fascinating world of commercial insurance for several decades. Through the window of insurance, I “experienced” nearly every other industry imaginable since all businesses need insurance. Insurance helps make the world to go around by managing financial risk. It is a great place to learn what makes a company successful – or not – in terms of business practices, processes, systems and most importantly people and leadership. It was highly varied opportunity to develop a resourceful, results-oriented business mind-set, a realization that “everyone is in sales”, and that every “problem” to be solved is truly an opportunity for the positive thinker.
After a time though, I felt type-cast as an insurance executive. In 2000, I left the comfort of my F500 world and joined my first tech start up. In yet another circuitous route, I ultimately became a strategy and operations consultant for early stage and small companies. This inspired me to found, launch and scale ResultsResourcing.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
There are few straight lines in any career and plenty of ups and downs, which builds resilience. I’ve had too many setbacks and steps forward to call on a specific story. But I became resilient because of my attitude toward the successes and the setbacks. They all taught me to (try) not judge myself, be curious, be open to change, to find the opportunity in events and pivot. I think of navigating my career like white-water rafting: keeping with the flow of the current, adjusting as boulders, rapids and eddies arise in the path downstream.
I hope I can inspire others to believe that “you can do it” and to never stop doing it. And there is no right answer to what “it” is (and “it” can, and probably should change). Be entrepreneurial about your career and your life. Be curious, take calculated risks, take that off-beat assignment to gain new experiences, have a side-hustle to try things out, network, hang-out with people who are different from you (and not all your same age or industry).
X years ago, I never would have imagined that I’d be a female tech entrepreneur today. I simply started working, with no grand aspirations, and made the most of every opportunity before me. Each step I took expanded my mental, emotional and professional eyes and that continually made more choices available to me.
Great ideas come at every age – just truly commit to making the most your ideas and expanding your outlook, one day a time.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I really relate to this question since we work day to day matching freelance pros (who have a side-hustle or a full-time business as a result of a successful side hustle) with clients who want their main hustle to scale and succeed at a higher level.
As I mentioned earlier, before launching ResultsResourcing, my main hustle was business consulting (after years in traditional jobs). My side hustle in retrospect was hiring superb freelancers with specific expertise to contribute value to my consulting projects. As my clients kept asking me to find them similar freelancers, I realized that curating freelance talent for my clients was a needed services not generally available to smaller businesses and I was highly qualified to perform it. My side-hustle turned into something bigger!
There were many milestones but three stand out:
One key milestone revolved around designing a two-sided service that focused on both the buyer (the hiring business) but also placed great value on the services seller (the talented freelance pros we want to attract to meet the clients’ needs). It was and is a highly iterative and rewarding process.
Second was designing and co-developing the technology platform, which is superbly scalable and customizable. The platform needed to do ALL the work moving a job from A to Z – inserting humans just when and only when human expertise is needed. This is the only way to deliver high touch talent curation cost-effectively to smaller businesses.
The last key (and ongoing) milestone, is advancing market acceptance of contractor talent curation. Many of our clients are referrals in search of service excellence. We are now serving more and more clients who find us through digital networks and marketing. Interestingly, one benefit from Covid was that many small businesses that had been reluctant to hire a remote worker now welcome vetted virtual contractors.
