We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elizabeth Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Elizabeth, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I moved to LA 10 days after I graduated from college to pursue acting. Ever since I was five years old and watched Poltergeist (strange movie choice for a five year old, I know) I had always wanted to move to Los Angeles and become an actor. When I arrived in LA, I jumped into acting classes, worked on multiple sets, and went out on auditions, but it was terrifying! Coming from the Midwest, I had never really failed at anything big before, let alone my BIGGEST dream. I knew I needed to have a side hustle so that I could pay for the apartment I shared with five people. I waited tables and catered until I met the CEO of an insurance company at one of the catering events. He offered me a job practically on the spot. Rather than make choices for my own life, I took this as a sign that maybe I was meant to go down this path. So…I got that insurance job which, sure, it paid the bills, but it also derailed my acting dream for FIVE years! To this day I look back and wonder what would have happened if I had stayed the course the whole time? Would I be further along? Would I have “made it” in Hollywood by now? Now that I have children of my own AND am pursuing my acting dream full time…I hope my kids look at me and say, “If my mom can make her biggest dreams come true then so can I!” And now I realize…it’s never too late!
Elizabeth, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Elizabeth Foster Davis. I’m married to another wonderful creative, Jason Davis, and we have three of the most beautiful kids on the planet (Cash – 7, Azlan – 5, and Charlotte – 1). I am a full-time mom, wife, actor, personal trainer (the side hustle I fell in love with), and together, my husband and I have a lactation cookie business, Milk ‘n Cookies. And no, our cookies are not made with breast milk–we get asked that all the time. They simply help increase breast milk production in moms who need a boost in their milk supply. They are super delicious and you don’t need to be nursing to eat them!
Because I fell in love with acting and the entertainment industry when I was five, I used to ask my parents if we could move to California, but they told me “No,” because of the earthquakes. Ha. But when I got my chance at 22, I hopped on a plane, flew to Los Angeles and never looked back.
I have studied at the Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB), The Imagined Life, Lesly Kahn, Playhouse West, Actors Certified Training, to name a few. My approach is that to grow as an actor, as a personal trainer, as someone in any industry, you have to keep learning, exercising those muscles on a daily basis. I try to do something daily that will help me grow as a human being and as an actor, a wife, a mother…it all helps.
I try to approach creative work with fun and joy as the backbone. I also love to express myself, so acting provides that gift for me and that’s what I personally love about the work. When I sort-of “black out” during a scene because I had an experience and my emotions take over…nothing feels better than that. Those are the moments I live for and that’s always my reminder of why I became an actor.
One of the things I’m most proud of–one of my biggest strengths–is my willingness to put in the time and energy.
I realize that there’s always room for improvement and I want to constantly and consistently improve my skills.
My three kids are my life, my love, my motivation. But being a mom of three, time is something I don’t have much of, especially with my kids so young, I have to be very intentional about everything I do. I have to create my self-tapes after my kids are in bed. I learn my lines while I’m nursing my daughter. My husband and I take turns as a reader for each other. It’s a lot, but we do it because we love it!
I got involved in personal training by taking a risk. I knew I didn’t want to work in insurance anymore and a friend recommended I become a personal trainer. She knew I worked out every day and lived a healthy lifestyle. She also thought I’d like it. Well…I said, “I’d rather fail forward,” meaning I’d rather try something and take a risk, then realize I’m not good at it or I don’t like it than not try at all. So…that’s what I did. I started personal training at one of the most prestigious gyms in the country and low and behold…I loved it AND was good at it. And after I had my first baby in 2017, I decided to train privately and go the self-employment route. FosterDavis (my personal training company) blossomed from there!
I love connecting with my personal training clients. I love creating programs for them centered around their fitness goals and watching them crush one goal at a time! I definitely have a cheerleader approach to training and try to always be optimistic, supportive, and fun. One of the best things about personal training to me is that I get to be surrounded with wonderful clients who share a similar energy as me and it never feels like work. I may be telling them what to do, demonstrating an exercise, but it also feels like I’m hanging with a friend.
Our Milk ‘n Cookies business started via word of mouth after we started baking our lactation cookies for friends and myself. My mom’s friends encouraged Jason and me to start selling our cookies because not only were they tasty, but they really gave their milk supply a boost. Our cookies help moms bond with their babies. And now, seven years after the first cookie was made, we finally launched our cookie business to serve the country and not just local moms. Additionally, for each dozen sold, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to local hospitals to help new moms who need extra care and to the neonatal intensive care unit.
One fun thing about me is that I’m a game show wiz! Just kidding, but I have been on at least five different game shows and win amazing prizes from cars, to trips, to cold hard cash! My secret is just to say, “yes,” to new opportunities that come my way and that is my approach to life as well.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
My goal and mission is to prove to myself and to my kids that you can do anything you set your mind to as long as you never give up. I let myself take the easier road when I took the ‘safety net’ insurance job, but all that did was provide a detour. I have always come back to the dream of acting. It took me ten years to realize that we get to choose our own path. No one is going to hand me my dreams on a silver platter. I’m going to have to go out and take it for myself. And that is what drives me today. I will put in the blood, sweat, and tears until I make it happen. “You are capable of anything!” is something I have said to my kids since before they could talk and I wholeheartedly believe that!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I had the realization that “Life doesn’t happen to you. You get to choose what you want your life to look like,” I was five months pregnant with baby number two and had a one year old at home. I made the decision to really give acting my all. I started taking classes at Playhouse West with a baby belly, mind you. One of my teachers even called me, “Mom.” I wasn’t going to let anything stop me. After I welcomed baby number two, who turned out to be a beautiful baby girl, I was back in class less than two months later. Pre and post birthing a human, I went to at least two rehearsals every single week. I had two scenes I had to prepare at a time, one for each class I was in, and I treated it like a job.
When COVID hit in 2020 and the world slowed down I saw that as an opportunity to really hone my skills as an actor. I started rehearsing every single day. I had a daily list of things I wanted to work on, whether it be a monologue, accent, or my emotional accessibility, I did it all and I did it consistently. I wanted to be even more ready when the world opened up again. And that is the work ethic I have continued to bring to the table for the last five years.
