We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elizabeth Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Elizabeth, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
It all started with a not so fancy camera and an amazing mentor. It was a huge risk but I quit my 9-5 to attempt to make it in the photography industry. I knew I loved it and I was past the burn out of my previous job. My friend and mentor, Kendrick Shaw, allowed me to follow him and gain some portfolio while learning all the basics and then some. Soon I was second shooting for weddings and then after, leading my own. It was a risk but I feel it was well worth it and I am so much happier doing what I love with people I love!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Elizabeth but most people call me Libby. I was born and raised in DFW and have always loved snapping pictures. Prior to investing in my self and skills I worked in management as well as customer service. I fell into the photography world when I reconnected with an old friend and started gaining mentorship through him. I knew it was what I wanted to do right away. While I love all avenues of photography, family & couples photography forever has my heart. Something about that connection that is witnessed through the lens and the perspective from an outsider that really makes me feel like I’m capturing something special.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Referrals! I feel as though past clients have sent me the most business! I lead my business with the ideology that kindness goes a long way along with consistency! I answer emails back as quickly as I see them come in and always try to make sure people know they are important and cared about. I feel like it’s a good boost and helps make me memorable to clients.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Word of mouth as well as social media has helped me tremendously. I try to stand apart from the majority with unique creativity and bold, vibrant color schemes.
