Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Elizabeth Cumberbatch. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Elizabeth, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
One major thing I do differently within my industry is I still make everything from scratch. I always like to highlight to my future customers that they are truly getting a custom cake. I really want my clients to get a one of a kind cake, so I take the extra effort to make my own batters, buttercream, brown butter, toffee, caramel, etc. I’ve even begun to make my own cake/cupcake toppers as much as possible. I believe it’s extra special when a client can feel as though their cake was made specifically for them.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m the owner and head baker at Sweetniz Cake Shop. I’m an Austin native who loves to celebrate and wants to encourage others to do the same. I specialize in custom cakes and cupcakes for birthdays, weddings, anniversary, business events, and more.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
As a cake decorator, so much of my job is about merging my vision with the client’s vision. So something I had to unlearn was the idea that my first design was my best design. When I was first starting out I would get so married to my initial design concept that even if it wasn’t working artistically or structurally, I would continued to try and make it happen. Often I was expending extra finances, time, and tears to make it work. Now I have not only learned the art of pivoting, but also learned that often times my first idea is simply that, “my first idea”. It is practically a first draft and true art takes multiple renderings.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is one of the trickiest areas of business I think all business owners have to face. I myself am still trying to learn the best way to grow an audience. Something that helped me the most however, was the advice to show myself. I am naturally a really shy person and that doesn’t necessarily go away just because I’m behind a screen. So I had to take this challenging advice and start showing my face more. I had to actually turn the camera around and start talking directly to my audience. I think that ended up making a world of difference because people became more invested in me and then invested in what ever I was selling/offering. As much as your craft matters, your audience really does love seeing the face behind the business.
