Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Elizabeth Berrocal. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Elizabeth, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
There were several defining moments along the course of my life which helped shape and define where I needed to be, and what exactly was my calling. At 19 years old I moved to London, England to begin my university education. It was in London, and the subsequent years there, which helped shift my perspective of a more global world; that although one can point out all the differences between the other, we are very much linked together with so many common bonds. This helped set the precedence for my eventual study of human behavior and relationships, leading me into the mental health sector. Throughout the course of the last 20 years, my educational background has led me to live and study in 3 different countries, encompassing every experience. Times were not always easy, and it took me quite a while to understand that it is through the turbulent times where one’s true character comes to the surface. Another major lesson learned was the fact that difficult situations allow for growth and transformation; without the difficult moments one cannot and will not be able to grow to their very fullest potential. Knowing and understanding each of us has a meaning and purpose in our lifetime to fulfill has been the cornerstone of my therapeutic approach.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
There were two things I always said I never wanted to become while I was growing up, an airline stewardess (my old fear of flying) and a mental health therapist. In typical Elizabeth fashion, I went on to become at least one of those professionals! I got into the mental health field because of my intrinsic love of human relations, both external and with the self. I knew my travels abroad, my perspectives and insights, as well as my education needed to be put into a profession that was aimed at helping others; I come from a long line of community leaders in my family, and I knew this was what I wanted to do. It was through studies and specialization in Women, Trauma, and EMDR therapy where I began to realize, both at a clinical and personal level, that the root of many people’s mental and emotional distress came from traumatic events, usually in their childhood. I began to notice there were (and are) many “adult children” walking around, unhealed and unfulfilled. I believe firmly we are at a time of decision making; one must ask ourselves, are we going to live in the shadows of our past, or are we going to muster the courage to examine what we need to do in order to heal? It’s not an easy decision, but one which needs to be made in order to find change and transformation. I do believe everyone can heal at an intrinsic level with the right guidance, tools, and skills. Being an EMDR therapist, I believe what sets me apart from other therapists is the fact that coming from a diverse community background, coupled with an emphasis on Trauma, allows me to view each patient for what they are: individuals coming to seek help for various and deeply personal reasons. Each person is different and comes to therapy to work on the matters they need in the moment; many therapists group and combine everyone under one specific therapeutic approach—I don’t believe one glove can fit everyone’’s hand, so to speak. Due to the eclectic nature of my therapeutic approach, I have since co-founded a business which specializes in sound therapy through guided meditations, sound therapy based in healing frequencies and vibrations, coupled alongside therapy. We put together workshops and seminars, and have been quite successful; it’s clear everyone needs some level of healing, and it is precisely through progressive and eclectics which enable one to know and understand diverse therapeutic approaches.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I would pick my profession over and over again! Through understanding and encompassing my innate passions, I have learned to not look at my profession as just a job, rather I turned my love into helping others as a passion. Through my passions of both mental health and music, I have recently delved into my more artistic side by creating Shadows and Sound, co-founded with my business partner, Brittany Myers (Catwalk), whom has been both a recognized DJ and music producer for over 15 years. I couldn’t love what I do more, encompassing both my need for purpose and passion in the my workspace.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I have the best business partner story! I met my business partner when I was gifted the best present one can ask for; learning to DJ and create music. I’ve always had a passion for house music, however during my years I was always “too busy” to fully commit to something outside of my work and family. Life took me into a different direction when I met Catwalk, and right away I knew she was my vibe.
As I began learning to DJ from her, she allowed the space for me to be me, a creative person who loves music. Catwalk encouraged me to tap more into this space, and I haven’t looked back since. I believe it’s incredibly important to team up with the right people whom resonate with you at an intrinsic level, being both in tune, but at the same time challenging your thought processes. Catwalk is an amazing example of finding a business partner whom creates the space to allow your passions to come to the surface. We always say our business relationship began the day we met, and I couldn’t be more blessed.
