Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Elizabeth Becker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Elizabeth thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I figured out my passion for writing music back in high school. I was between wanting to be an animator or a composer and eventually got down to pursing music in college. I went to Berklee College of Music in 2019 and graduated in August of 2023. Having the privilege to go to Berklee is something I will always be grateful for. I got to study Film and Media Scoring, a major that is not at many colleges. Here is where I learned the basics and got a fantastic foundation of scoring for media. Knowing what I know now after being in the industry for a year, there are things that college can’t teach and only the industry can. The most essential skills in this field, in my opinion, are in technology. It is always changing and updating, and being able to adapt to the newest skill is important. I’m not sure if this is an “obstacle”, but now being a part-time assistant I know college can’t teach working with a composer. Each composer is different, and after working at Bleeding Fingers Music for a year, I know that it takes time to adapt to what different composers need assistance with. That is only something you can get from working in the field, and I am very grateful that I have gotten this opportunity to work at this company. I have learned so much this past year and am excited to keep learning more and more skills!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a composer, arranger, and vocalist from Cincinnati, Ohio. I moved to Los Angeles last September and have now been here for a little over a year. I have written music for short films and video games and have been assisting Laurentia Editha at Bleeding Fingers Music for a year now. Recently, I composed for “Marcie’s Ashes”, a web-novel series written by Iona Sol. You can hear my track on the audio book: https://readmarciesashes.wordpress.com/audiobook/
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
My experience explaining my journey as a creative started with my parents. My mother is a psychologist and my father is an engineer. Both had specific tracks in their professions. The biggest difference, to me, is the way you develop your career. I’ve had to explain to them and other family members that growth in the film industry is slow and steady, and there isn’t one clear path. For myself, I’ve taken the assistantship path to start out. For some friends from my graduating class, they took the freelance route. There is not one singular path to become a film composer, and every time I talk to a more experienced industry professional, I learn a new path one can take.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My biggest reason to be in the music for media industry is because of how helpful the music was for me growing up. I turned to music for movies, games, TV shows, and trailers when I was struggling in high school, so it is important to me that I can help do the same for someone else.
