We recently connected with Elizabeth Alcala and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Elizabeth , thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
What led me down a creative path was growing up watching my father draw for his architecture school. I also saw him create 3-D models with his own hands. He introduced me to the world of creativity, being a big DIY enthusiast himself. He was the one who taught me how to sew and use a sewing machine. Every year for Halloween, he hand-made all of my costumes. Creating things with my own hands brings me immense joy, especially when I can share my artwork with others, allowing them to wear it every day.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started making costumes for myself and became intrigued by how I could incorporate that creativity into my everyday wear. I’ve always been drawn to alternative fashion because of its uniqueness and playful nature. I design clothes inspired by the witchy, magical world, and my artwork reflects this dark, mystical influence as well. Even though my art has a dark, witchy vibe, I love adding a touch of cuteness to it. I also enjoy blending my clothing designs into my artwork, creating clothing capsules that reflect the wardrobe of alternative, spooky characters. My designs are both spooky and elegant, and my goal is to bring high-end, classy fashion to alternative wear. Most importantly, I want to make clothing fun again.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn as a creative was the idea that I always needed to follow a traditional path or conform to what others expected of me. Early on, I felt pressured to make my work “acceptable” or fit within mainstream standards, thinking that success came from playing by the rules. However, as I explored my creativity more deeply, I realized that my most authentic work emerged when I allowed myself to break those boundaries and embrace what made me different.
In the beginning, I used to second-guess my artistic choices because I didn’t want to risk being misunderstood or rejected. But over time, I learned that creativity thrives when you take risks and trust your instincts. I had to unlearn the fear of being judged and start embracing the unconventional aspects of my work. Once I let go of that pressure, I found my true creative voice and the process became more fulfilling. Now, I know that staying true to my unique vision is what sets me apart and leads to the most meaningful growth as an artist.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the ability to connect with others through my work. Whether it’s someone wearing a piece I designed or engaging with my artwork, knowing that what I create resonates with others on a personal level is incredibly fulfilling. There’s a deep sense of satisfaction in sharing my vision and seeing it spark something in others—whether it be joy, inspiration, or even a sense of belonging.
It’s also rewarding to have the freedom to express myself authentically and continuously grow. Creativity allows me to explore different ideas, experiment with new techniques, and evolve as an artist. That constant evolution keeps things exciting and gives me a sense of purpose in the work I do. Ultimately, the emotional impact my art can have, both on myself and others, is what makes the journey as an artist so meaningful.
