We recently connected with Elizabeth Akmal and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Elizabeth, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
When I learned about 3D Printing, I was intrigued by the technology, but worried I wouldn’t be able to put in the time and energy it takes to learn a new skill. Since I am also a mother and a caretaker, it leaves me with limited extra time. I started by researching everything I could about 3D printing, the process, the practicality, and how it could be used in my life. Soon after I stared my research, I was fortunate to use a 3D Printer thanks to a friend. I was able to learn first-hand what it was like to use and maintenance a 3D Printer, I began to design my own work starting with household needs and then developed the 3Dprinted art that I have now. I had a lot of failures initially, but I found I really enjoyed to process. Shortly after, I invested in my own 3D Printer and began designing and printing on a regular basis.
Elizabeth, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The ability to create physical objects from computer drafted designs has always been fascinating to me. After buying my first 3D Printer I put my energy into learning about different materials, programming and 3D modeling. As I got better, I posted my process online and showcased my favorite designs. The majority of my printing at the beginning was practical, or small batches for friends and family. That quickly became bigger custom orders from designs that I made. Those orders grew into what today is my 3D Printing service Missouri Mint. When I am designing, I take special care to consider how each piece is made to ensure durability and wear and avoid waste. For my designs I take inspiration from nature, the city I live in, and pop culture. My style is bold and definitely meant to stand out.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Art and sustainability are important to me. My inventory is completely custom and small batch for this reason. As an artist, my own personal goal is to be environmentally coconscious, and my 3D prints are designed to be durable and lightweight. I try to Print with and little waste as possible. I also try to partner with as many local businesses as I can throughout each year. Most recently I showcased my 3D Printed jewelry and newest designs at the First Fridays Art Shows at Misson Taco Joint with other local artists. Working with the other artists and collaborating with them was a pleasure-Most of my 3d printing is done online where you can’t see the in-person reaction. Seeing people enjoy my work is fantastic, and I hope to do more outdoor events in the future.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
In the beginning of my journey, I struggled to find many women who 3D Printed, and it was even harder to find Black women in 3D Printing like myself. The world of 3D Printing is very male dominated and very few are being recognized for their contribution to the 3d printing community in my opinion. On top of that, Most still consider printing a craft, don’t understand the engineering that can be involved, and underestimate the possibilities. Inclusive designs for all ages and abilities, and designs working with handicaps is one of the things that initially interested me in 3D Printing and a factor I try and include in my own designing process. It’s a skill that I have been able to pass down to my own child who enjoys designing and 3dPrinting almost as much as me.
