We were lucky to catch up with Elizabeta Vidovic, Kathryn Michelle, and Izabela Vidovic recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Elizabeta, Kathryn, and Izabela, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project we have worked on as a trio was our latest feature film, The Accursed. The project was actually written by Elizabeta and Kathryn over a decade ago, making it one of the first screenplays the ladies wrote together! When they revisited the idea and decided to bring it to fruition, it made it all the more special considering it felt like their baby. In addition, it was the first full-length feature that Izabela co-produced with the company, at which point she decided to join the team full time. Although the three ladies have been working together since the formation of the company in 2010, The Accursed is really when this Almost Normal trio was officially formed! It’s a sentimental project for us for that reason.
Elizabeta, Kathryn, and Izabela, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
All three of us have individually been in the entertainment industry for a combined 30+ years (obviously Izabela for a little less time than that, *wink). Funny enough, we all started in acting and some of us still do! Almost Normal Productions itself, however, sprung from the desire to create content where women were written as badass protagonists. We are a film production company who both develops all of its own content, and can also help other creatives take their projects from development to the finish line.
What sets us apart is our diverse backgrounds. For one, the age difference in the trio gives our projects a broader scope. While some of our films are told from the perspective of a woman in her 40s-60s, others follow a young woman in her teens and 20s. In addition, Elizabeta and Izabela’s Croatian roots and Kathryn’s midwest background offer our stories a unique flair. Our differences compliment one another and allow us the opportunity to speak to people of all ages and walks of life.
We are proud to say that we only work on projects that all three of us are equally passionate about, meaning that when we decide to dive into a film, we really give it our everything.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Elizabeta and Kathryn have raised children and kept day jobs while simultaneously developing, screenwriting and producing projects. This meant waking up extra early in the morning to get those pages written, or putting the baby in the cart while shopping for props for their next film. Izabela, on the other hand, being in a completely different stage of life – was juggling acting gigs and high school homework while eagerly producing her first feature film with Elizabeta and Kathryn. The three of us have a real understanding of what it means to be resilient and push through even during those stickier parts of life.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
One thing that many non-creatives struggle to understand about the journey of a creative is that it can take a minute (or two… *wink) to see a financial profit from your work. Oftentimes, a person’s financial gain is a measure of their success – and that is especially untrue when it comes to creative fields. Many tend to think that a lack of profit indicates a lack of talent, which isn’t the case at all. Unlike most professions, there is no clear path for many creative careers, which means we usually have to pave our own.
Not many creatives are fortunate enough to support themselves solely off of their creativity, and securing a flexible day job that allows them to pursue their dreams is its own sign of great success. Success in the creative world is not black and white. Most creatives are forced to work a lot harder, having to keep that side job in order to do what they really love. Overall, success comes in many different forms.
