Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Elizabet Abraham. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Elizabet thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s go back in time a bit – can you share a story of a time when you learned an important lesson during your education?
I was gently caressing my skin, exploring it as the largest organ in my body. Eyes closed while running my fingertips from one arm, to my chest, down to my womb and hips. I felt an internal shift like never before. I felt whole. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, I had always longed to feel whole instead of broken. Years of talk therapy and yet in a classroom surrounded by my cohort and being guided by a grad school professor was when I felt the closest to “healed.” Dance therapy changed my life and this is a moment I will always cherish. It was the beginning of my journey experiencing my body as a resource, which is what I help my clients with.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Board-Certified Dance/Movement Therapist who helps women feel free and whole. I specialize in past trauma and transitional periods. My offers include embodiment workshops, one on one, and group programs in English and Spanish. I provide my clients a unique transformative experience as I guide them to connect with their body through movement to release anxious thoughts and old fear stored in their body. I went through my own transformational journey moving through past trauma, which is what ignites my passion in helping women heal through embodiment. I am based in Miami, FL and serve clients all over the world virtually.
I love witnessing those I serve reconnect with their body’s natural wisdom and learn to listen to it. In my sessions we use movement, art, mindful journaling, guided visualizations and body-based techniques to help my clients process on a bodily level instead of keeping everything we discuss as concepts in their mind. They get to embody healing instead of just talking about it. This is especially powerful for those who experience anxiety and overthink. My ultimate goal is giving my clients the gift of themselves- their WHOLE, authentic self.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was that there is a specific “right” way to run my business based on “experts'” advice. After working with a few coaches I had to take in all that I learned that was serving me and also let go of all the things that didn’t align with me. I am unique, so what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for me. I had gotten caught up with “needing” to post on social media every day, ideally multiple times a day and “needing” to write headlines a certain way. This resulted in doubting my own intuition. Once I took time to move my business, I gained more clarity and peace of mind. What I mean by move my business is, I get grounded in my body, then begin listening to how my body wants to move as a business owner. While moving, I sense how I am feeling physically and emotionally and ask my body what it needs. Ideas come up that I am very excited about and I get clear on how I want to do things. By doing this, I reconnect with what works for MY nervous system, which allows me to show up more authentically and find my voice, while feeling good about running my business!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Before COVID, I was hosting monthly in person new moon and full moon workshops. I was also seeing my one on one clients in person. I started my business not too long before COVID, so it was growing organically. I decided to stop the workshops after hosting a few online and switched my one on one clients to online. Right at the beginning I was experiencing more anxiety and feeling “zoomed out.” That’s when I invested in a business coach and immersed myself in growing as a business owner for 6 months. After that, I gained more clarity on the structure of my offers and my clientele. Once again, my business started growing more organically by word of mouth, networking and referrals. The silver lining from all of this was learning that providing dance therapy virtually is just as effective as in person and I now see clients from all over. Even though I live in Miami, most of my clients are from New York. I also get to work from home which is very convenient now that I am a mama! I hope to start up my workshops again soon and maybe start hosting some in person in the near future.
