We were lucky to catch up with Elisha Horne recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Elisha, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I always said that music was my first language, before I could talk I was humming and singing around the house. And it helped because I grew up in a family of people who sang and understood music. As I got older I started noticing how people would always ask for me to sing or quote something off a movie I had saw. And that would spark something in me that loved seeing people smile and laugh, so when I was 9 years old I said I wanted to be an entertainer. My parents started taking me very seriously once they saw my dedication and how I would study music listening to a song over and over again. I would listen to the inflection of their voice, listen to when they would take a breath and start a phrase. Or how when I watched movies I would replay parts to see how they moved or study how they delivered certain lines. So they ended up getting me into theater programs like The CLO Academy of Pittsburgh. Then Musical theater became my passion and my bootcamp to becoming the performer I wanted to be. I always knew that I was meant to be and entertainer and performer so it felt amazing to be in a space where I felt free to create and also learn the disciplines that I would need to be successful.
Elisha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born and raised in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and very proud of my city. I started singing in the church choir, bc I was told I had a voice at a very young age and I also saw my parents and family doing it. And later on when I started taking performing serious I started doing school musicals and musicals at different theater camps. And when I got into highschool I ended up moving to Aurora Colorado but I continued in the theater pathway, and the choir teacher there John Richard noticed my voice and decided to recruit me for the school choir. So I also started doing choir competitions for show choir, acapella choir, and jazz choir. And along with that my parents told me to pick up an instrument so I could learn how to read music. So all of that along with taking theater classes ended up preparing me to be a great showmen. My senior year I ended up winning the “Bobby G Awards” for best actor in a musical and I was nominated again for best actor in a musical in the “Jimmy Awards” and won a scholarship fund. So when I graduated from Highschool I decided to just start auditioning for shows and it became a great experience for me doing local theater and booking gigs. But unfortunately COVID hit a few years later, so I had to find another way to express myself bc all theaters where closed during that time. I ended up working on my song writing because I had a friend who was making beats and another friend who was learning music production. That ended up sparking my love for creating music, and that was an interesting time in my life bc before that I was so used to singing songs already written, doing someone else’s choreography, or having scenes blocked for me. But this put more pressure on me to be more creative and then take the responsibility for what I made, and that was scary but also very exciting. And that’s when I knew all of these steps I took in life lead me to this moment to start creating my own music so I could be the entertainer and artist I was meant to be.
This whole process of experiencing who I am as a creative has been the best part of all of this bc I’ve learned how to be a better leader and better entertainer and a better person because of it, and I believe that’s what sets me apart from others is my heart, my passion and my positive energy I bring to those around me. And I hope anyone I come across feels that.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Something that’s really helped me build a good reputation and keep it is my work ethic, my positive attitude and my willingness to learn. This is a career field where it’s easy to become overly confident in oneself but you can just as quickly be discouraged and forget your value. So it’s so important to check on your mental health, remind yourself why you are doing what you do, be open to learning more because once you stop learning that’s when you’ve achieved everything you needed to in this life, and lastly understand your worth and what you bring to the table.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
There have been many times throughout the process of creating my own music I felt defeated but I just had to keep pushing because I understood there where some things I had to learn and to this day I’m still learning. Doing something like this independently can be difficult and can at times feel like your hitting a brick wall because you don’t have the money or the support behind you when you’re first starting out. But I’ve learned consistency is key, and even when you don’t think anyone is watching they really are. People see your dedication and they become inspired and will want to work with you or invest in you or give you connections. And it’s all because of the work ethic and passion that they see. If you don’t believe in it, your audience won’t believe in it.
