Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Elisha Floyd. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Elisha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Considering yourself part of an alternative fashion community can come with a lot of misunderstandings from all different sides! From folks thinking you’re wearing a costume of a character- when you’re actually just a person expressing your personal daily style, to folks making assumptions that maybe you’re an oddball, or someone who must not be a professional in their work life balance. People forget hobbies are an important part of finding who you are as a person, and they come in all types and don’t look just one way!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I first started in the world of cosplay and alternative fashion over seven years ago. I was inspired to start the same way a lot of fellow creatives in this community begin- being inspired by others. I went to my first convention and saw how everyone was expressing their passion for fandom in their detailed cosplays, seeing folks expressing their own personal style through eccentric fashion, and seeing the community of it all. It immediately clicked that this was for me, and it was going to become a big part of who I was as I person. During the first 2020 lockdown I turned to slowly beginning my journey of content creation, a way to still connect to the community and have a place to express myself even while staying indoors. Since then it’s become my norm, a fun way to express and document my passions, and give some tips and tricks along the way. Hopefully encouraging new folks that may come across me to feel comfortable enough to give alternative fashion or cosplay a try for themselves one day.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I absolutely wish as a newbie jfashion wearer in the alternative fashion circle I knew about how much local community there was! It took me a good three years to find out about local meet ups- there’s something really special about sharing passions with like-minded folks! I would definitely want to share one first tip with every person looking to start wearing alternative fashion, look into local groups! It’s a great way to grow your own style, learn, and have fun.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of putting yourself out there whether it be online or in person is giving a little push to others feelings nervous about trying something new themselves. I tend to get some comments online from folks saying they’d love to dress alternative too but are scared to wear it in public. Just knowing maybe I can give a little boost to others that maybe they too can dress a little funky. Be a little silly, dress a little funky! Life is too short to be concerned over other’s perception of you. Go to the grocery store in a cosplay with your friends- wear jfashion to the movies and make an event of it for yourself! Whatever makes you smile.
