We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Elise Shaw-smith. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Elise below.
Elise, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Growing up, my mom committed suicide when I was about 11 years old. She dealt with addiction, and a lot of various mental health issues. I could tell it was very hard for her to take care of herself when it came to hygiene, along with many other things. As time went on I realized I had some of the same mental health issues, as well as the disease of addiction. The two together don’t mesh very well, and I was left with the same issue of taking care of myself. The depression made everything very difficult. I felt like showering, taking care of my skin, brushing my hair, even teeth was a huge chore. I decided to start creating skincare products that not only benefit one’s skin, but also were fun and a great way to make self care exciting, and something to actually look forward to. I found my way out of active addiction 1 and a half years ago, and can not be more proud of the women I’ve become. Self care is something we all deserve. We need to make ourselves a priority. Because if we can’t be there for ourselves, how can we be there for others? I create skincare products in unique, fun scents. I also like to create some fun color ways, and one of the things that is very aesthetically pleasing is the swirls we top off our body butters with!

Elise, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into my industry being inspired by a few other skincare brands, and I realized that self care and mental health was something I really wanted my business to focus on. Having a business has helped me so much with self discipline. It was always hard for me to discipline myself when it came to things I needed to get done. I had trouble prioritizing things. I’ve realized with a business, in order for it to be successful, you need consistency. At times when I wasn’t very consistent, I realized my business wasn’t doing too well. I like to create ASMR videos of the process behind making the skincare. Who doesn’t love soothing sounds? I provide exciting, and unique skincare products that have so many benefits. A lot of our products have a shea butter base which is so good for soothing conditions such as eczema, or just irritated or itchy skin.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I noticed the different trends for reels or TikTok’s, and took advantage. Being consistent is definitely super important and a key to creating a customer base. Create your target audience, and market to them. As I began to stay consistent, and started posting daily I realized it was building views. ASMR videos are very popular, especially in the skincare industry. I saw what were popular ASMR videos and created some for my own products. When I really started getting a bump in sales, I posted a lotion filling video that received about 5 million views. I stopped being consistent about a year later, and the views drastically dropped. However, once I started becoming consistent again, I was able to grow back my views slowly but steady. You have to remember that the ones that make it, are always the ones that don’t give up. I’m not perfect, and sometimes life happens and I have to step away from creating and posting content for a week or so, but I try to be consistent as possible. Also, creating aesthetically pleasing videos are super important.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn that defensiveness that would come along with criticism. The customer really is always right. I needed to learn to cater to my audience, and listen to their constructive criticism and needs. Even when a customer may be upset about something such as the texture of a product or a certain scent, I can always learn from that. I really appreciate the constructive criticism I receive at times. Growth is always an ongoing process. Sometimes I just need to listen and accept that fact that sometimes people won’t like what I like, and that’s perfectly okay.
