We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Elisabetta Marzetti. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Elisabetta below.
Alright, Elisabetta thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
In my life, I haven’t always been a photographer. Initially, I was a high school teacher of Spanish language and culture. However, alongside my teaching career, I discovered a passion for photography. After five years, I made a pivotal decision: photography would be my life. This meant leaving my permanent teaching position and opening my own business with zero clients. I sold my car and used the money to buy my first camera.
I decided to start visiting Milan whenever possible, taking photos outside fashion shows. Then, something incredible happened – a fashion editor from a well-known Italian magazine noticed my work and asked me to start working for them. Just a few months later, I embarked on a wonderful journey, traveling the world to places like Milan, Paris, and New York. Today, photography is not just my career; it’s my life, and my office is wherever in the world I happen to be :)
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As someone who initially immersed myself in the fashion industry, my career took a serendipitous turn when I had the opportunity to shoot a bridal editorial. This experience unveiled the enchanting world of destination weddings, a realm I instantly fell in love with. Determined to delve deeper, I reached out to several wedding planners to collaborate on editorials, which subsequently led to my first international clients.
Today, my focus is on world-class events, along with a passion-driven venture into interior and lifestyle photography. My clientele is predominantly international, with my work spanning across Italy and Europe. Recently, I’ve also begun receiving requests for events in the USA.
What I believe truly distinguishes my work is the blend of my fashion photography background with a commitment to authenticity and honesty in my storytelling. It’s essential for me that my clients, as well as the wedding planners I collaborate with, feel a sense of security and trust in my approach. This is my primary goal as both a photographer and a person. Moreover, I am known for my calm demeanor and kind heart, traits that allow me to manage my work with serenity and balance. These qualities not only help me in dealing with the dynamic nature of events but also in creating a relaxed and positive atmosphere for my clients :)
Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
One of the most challenging moments in my business wasn’t exactly financial, but it was undoubtedly a shock. Two years ago, right after the pandemic, I experienced the theft of all my photography equipment on a train returning from a job. Fortunately, I’m meticulous with my hard drives, which I always keep in a separate bag with me, so the work itself wasn’t lost. However, in a matter of seconds, I saw all the photographic equipment I had acquired over years of work and sacrifice disappear, and it was traumatic.
This incident led me to profound reflection on how often we identify ourselves with the things we own. But I realized that without my cameras, I am still me. The passion and feelings I experience when I’m photographing cannot be taken away by anyone. This experience, though deeply unsettling, reinforced my belief in the essence of my identity and craft, transcending the mere tools of my trade.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is the freedom it entails. This freedom manifests in various forms. Firstly, there’s the freedom of expression, allowing me to convey my vision, emotions, and perspectives through my work. It’s the liberty to create something unique and personal, a reflection of my inner world.
Secondly, there’s the freedom of choice in my projects. I get to decide what I work on, how I approach it, and with whom I collaborate. This autonomy is empowering and fosters a deep sense of satisfaction and personal accomplishment.
Lastly, there’s the freedom that comes with being my own boss. It allows me to dictate my schedule, work environment, and overall career trajectory. This level of control over my professional life is not just liberating but also incredibly motivating. It pushes me to continuously evolve, explore new ideas, and challenge myself in my artistic journey.
In essence, the freedom inherent in being an artist is both exhilarating and fulfilling, fueling my passion and drive to create and inspire.
