We were lucky to catch up with Elisabeth Hill recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Elisabeth , thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I have lots of projects I’ve done that have been meaningful. Between boudoir sessions and seeing self love grow within the clients, from portraits and seeing them expressing powerful emotions. However I have done a body positivity shoot before. Showing that self love comes in so many different kinds of forms, the models eyes lighting up from seeing their pictures. The meaningful sessions all come from them expressing emotions

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started getting into photography in middle school, it all started when my dad gave me his old camera. Of course, I had no idea what I was doing, nor did I have a direction. All I knew in my head was “this would look cool!”. From there, I’ve learned so much, from camera systems, editing programs, and having direction. I specialize in portraits, as I really enjoy bringing concepts to life and helping the model(s) expressing emotion. I really enjoy the dark part of art, showing that part of you that is hard to bring out. Learning to process and handle hard emotional turmoil is important, I strive to help with the process, as someone who has the same problem. However I enjoy showing clients how beautiful they are as well. Seeing their eyes light up and seeing the change in their eyes of how they view themselves really brightens my soul. Showing them they’ve always been beautiful, that they’ve always had their beauty. I believe my work stands out as I have strong direction within my shoots, showing the different perspectives, capturing true human emotion. I accept different themed shoots, to capture and bring to life what clients don’t have words for. Showing the types of atmosphere, and providing a safe place for the human experience to take place.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
To stop being so critical of myself. I always see every single “flaw” within my images, however no one sees what I see. Also being receptive to constructive feedback is important as well. Also learning the difference between constructive and negative criticism…not everyone is out to watch you fail, but also not everyone is your friend. Very important to know and understand the difference.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being respectful, and receptive. Always making sure to ask the model(s) before adjusting anything that involves physical touch. There are so many photographers in the industry that do not consider touching the model as respect. Being respectful goes a long way, and it helps everyone feel comfortable. Being receptive is a good trait to have, as the model will have suggestions for what they want within the shoot. Always listen to ideas/suggestions the model/client has!
