We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Elis Monsport. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Elis below.
Hi Elis, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Education gave me a great foundation, as the first secondary school where I learned to mold, work with ceramics and porcelain. This was followed by the UMPRUM university in the glass studio under the leadership of Rony Plesl. That helped me find my way, a way of expressing myself and a lot of contacts for the future. However, I learned the most in the process of work, creation or during the implementation of an order. Learning in the process and from the craftsmen I work with has been the greatest school. I was most interested in engraving, so I went to a weekend course with the great engraver Jaroslav Šára. After some time, I bought my own engraving machine and looked for boundaries that could be crossed. So I try to make the engraving bigger and bigger, which is something for which I needed to create tools. In my opinion, speeding up the process is not very possible in this case, you need to “sit it out”. Maybe it would be nice to have an experienced technician next to you who would be helpful in optimizing production. The most important thing is patience :) At this moment, it would help me to have more capital to be able to experiment more and to have space for free creation.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Eliška Monsportová – founder of the Elis Monsport brand is a multidisciplinary artist and designer who focuses on the complexity of glass engraving.
She was born in 1996 and studied in the glass studio at UMPRUM under the guidance of Rony Plesl, and her greatest inspiration was the selflessness and authenticity of nature, landscapes, rocks and textures, which she blends into her works using various craft techniques.
Elisa’s work speaks to us trought its stories, artistic-craftsmanship and the uniqueness of each object – she makes almost everything as unique and unrepeatable pieces or series of small pieces. If you buy a vase from her, it is certain that no one will ever have the same one again.
A large part of Elisa’s work is based on collaboration with brands or making custom-made works of art and objects. He can sense you perfectly and create for you exactly what you need. Starting with design pieces for your interior or large-scale engravings, which in cooperation with an architect can become an integral part of your home.
Her work is specific and special, she often works with mirrors and engraving.
Engraving. A traditional craft technique, somewhat underrated but very close to my heart.
When I work with this technique, I am absolutely absorbed by the physicality of it. My mind becomes as transparent as glass and my hands create a piece of reality from my thoughts in the form of a work of art. My work with engraving starts with a small vase and can end up with large-format walls, which can be part of architecture or stand-alone works of art. Come with me on a journey to artistic expression, elevating traditional craft with a free mind and hard work into the world of art.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I would very much like to do an engraving for architecture. A large-scale engraving can be a room divider, a window… Collaborated with architects, developers and made art glass as an integral part of modern construction.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think it would be beautiful if more work was done with art as a part of architecture, interior design. So that it is an undeletable item. It often happens that construction modifications exceed the budget so much that there is no money left for the planned works of art.
