Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Elin Dagsberg. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Elin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
I started hair school at sixteen in high school. We had hair three days a week and other subjects like math, English, history for two days. One of those days we had to be at a salon. For three years I was at that same salon every Friday and when school was over we had established a relationship and they had trained me well to fit into their salon so they offered me a job.
Elin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a child I loved going to the hair salon, it was exciting for me and I always let the hairdresser do whatever they wanted with my hair. I knew I wanted to be a hairstylist at a young age. I liked how creative and social the job was, I wanted to make people feel as good as I did when I left the salon. Today I’m specializing in colour and haircuts that bring out the best in clients natural colours and textures. I create hair that is easy to manage with seamless grow out. I think what makes me stand out as a stylist is that I build a strong relationship with my clients, it’s important to me that they feel seen and heard in my chair and that they feel fulfilled on the inside as much as on the outside. My chair is a safe space for anyone, as a queer woman I know how it feels to be discriminated or treated poorly. Everybody is welcome in my chair. I’m proud of myself for having a successful business in a foreign country, I moved to Canada from Sweden 2016.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I believe that if you have passion for what you do, you really enjoy building your business. Work becomes fun and fulfilling when it’s your passion. I think a growth mindset is equally as important. I’ve been lucky to work with amazing people that I look up to they acted as mentors and helped me with goal setting and keeping me accountable. They tought me how important it is to know your numbers and how to track them every day to make sure at the end of the month you know how much you’ll be making. Another thing is resilience, there will be ups and downs when owning a business and you have to learn to be extra cautious when things are going well so you have saved money for when things are going slower. Being able to network with other businesses and build strong relationships is very important, where ever I go I make sure I make a good impression because every person you meet is a potential client.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
When I have a new client in my chair that I think is my ideal customer I make sure I let them know! I will tell them how lovely they are and that I would love to meet their friends and family! I make sure they leave my business with a few of my business cards. This is literally how I build my clientele. As a young stylist I would even offer discounts to those people for their first treatment with me. Another great tool is Instagram, ask clients to post about you and use paid ads to reach more people. It works!
