We were lucky to catch up with Elijah Tutt recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Elijah, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
My Biggest Risk was starting my firm. After working for the City of Atlanta in three different yet major roles, running for pubic office and even a short stint of one year teaching, the risk was leaving it all behind. Creating a new career, having to juggle making new networking connections, establishing your office, your brand and even yourself. Leaving comfort for the unknown was the risk. Yet the real risk came when I looked into my bank account and said okay i have a nice nest egg and i have enough to start out and still pay my bills not knowing what tomorrow would bring, I started out on my own with Resurgence Consulting LLC and the only thing I knew in that moment was i couldn’t fail myself. After opening the doors of my firm the bills came quickly(lol). The mortgage, car note, utilities, office rent, oh lol and the high independent health insurance, wining and dinning clients to promote yourself and the business and still having to maintain other financial obligations. I went nearly broke. SO…. I then looked at my finances again and got scared almost scared enough to call my old boss and ask for my JOB back with the City of Atlanta. Then one morning, I said well i have a retirement pension and i will pull all of it out and I did just that. I looked at that and said now Elijah, this is it if you spend this you will officially be broke financially. That same night, I heard a little whisper in my ear and a deep gut feeling saying keep going and don’t look back. Don’t regret this I’ve got you. That was the Bigg Fella UPStairs named God. I had to rely on faith to carry me through. Just when I thought i was going to go broke, I land a major client and that really begin my journey and the Risk has been worth it all. Every high and low, good or bad day has been worth the reward.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
What sets me and my business apart from other firms alike is that we take pride, dedication, honesty and hard work serious around here. There isn’t a day that i come into the office and realize how much work and talent is here. I follow up every morning with a round table discussion with each member of the firm as to the close of the previous day and the agenda / task for the day. I dive into the work and often times find myself checking behind the work of each member of the firm. Me checking behind them isn’t to micromanage, yet it is to be assured that each client is represented best by Resurgence and that Resurgence is being displayed as the firm that cares.
Getting to where I am today wasn’t easy but it was the best decision i made. I don’t think id be as happy working for anyone or any entity as i am for owning and working with the team members of Resurgence Consulting LLC.
As our Moto says. We are Small enough to know you and Large enough to Grow you.
My favorite quote of all times that I say to myself daily It’s All In the State of Mind by Walter D. Wintle.
If you think you are beaten, you are,
If you think that you dare not, you don’t,
If you’d like to win, but you think you can’t, It’s almost certain you won’t.
If you think you’ll lose, you’ve lost,
For out in the world, you’ll find Success begins with a fellow’s will
It’s all in the state of mind.
Full many a race is lost ere even a step is run.
And many a coward falls ere even his work’s begun,
Think big, and your deeds will grow; Think small, and you’ll fall behind; Think that you can, and you will— It’s all in the state of mind.
If you think you are out-classed, you are; You’ve got to think high to rise;
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before you ever can win a prize,
Life’s battles don’t always go.
To the stronger or faster man; But sooner or later the man who wins is the man who thinks he can.
What I am most proud of is a recent rezoning I completed for a client in SW Atlanta. 257 Oakcliff Road. Taking 21Acres of land (in my native community and location of which I still reside) from a zoning of R4 to MR-2. Making the land usable for Multiple housing arrangements in addition to commercial. It excited me then and even more-so now that its finalized because I know that with rezoning and selling the the property I was apart of a major and influential impact to my community that will give provide quality jobs, housing, entertainment, eateries and appeal to that neighborhood. My work will be beneficial for many generations. When I am older, I would like to say to my children and grandchildren while driving and seeing it, I was able to make that happen. Thats a good feeling to know your work was impactful enough that it may succeed your lifetime.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Honesty, attention to details, motivation, navigating the unknown, keeping your clients informed within the process of their situation that they put their trust in your firm to get the job done, going the extra mile to get the client the positive outcome and even going back into a room full of no’s to get the yes. That kind of dedication and work ethic speaks for itself and supersedes you and can retain or attain a client quickly and it build a reputation of he or his team can, they will, they are, they do it. ” Let the works of done speak for me”
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
The little things foster brand loyalty. Remember the details of the client. Remember what the individual or company liked and disliked. Remember the birthdays, anniversaries of the individual or company and send a card on those occasions. Thank each client verbally and in writing because they didn’t have to choose you or choose to come back to you. I continue to do just that no matter how much our company has grown, I still provide that quality and person one-on-one touch that only Resurgence Consulting LLC is known for. Again, our motto is “We are Small Enough to know you and Large Enough to Grow You.”
