We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Elijah Patchen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Elijah below.
Elijah, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I think that when it comes to this question, I often had thoughts over the last couple of years that went something like “If only I had started earlier, I would be so much better/more successful/happier” or whatever. However, these thoughts often resulted from me comparing myself to someone else. The comparison game is a zero-sum game that leaves you feeling empty and resentful. Everyone is on their own journey. We don’t all have the same talents, upbringing, resources, training, or whatever, but I believe that it is never too late to start something that you are passionate about whether it’s something creative or not. Learning how to just start and accept that some are ahead of you is super important to your own mindset. I think that I am perfectly happy with when I started. Don’t play the comparison game.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Elijah Patchen and I go by the artist alias MOYLOM (Pronounced Moi·Lum). I am an electronic music producer and DJ based out of Denver, Colorado. MOYLOM is an acronym for “more of you, less of me” which symbolizes my desire to be more like Christ in everything I do as well as my desire to develop an intimate and personal relationship with Jesus. I am currently on a journey to develop my own sound in order to change the world for the better through music and bring people closer to the creator of the universe. I got into EDM and specifically dubstep in middle school through YouTube and SoundCloud. I have followed the scene all the way up through the end of my college career at DU. I currently make dubstep and have released tracks on Extol Records and Apostle Records, 2 distinct Christian EDM (CEDM) labels as well as a few self releases. I am the most proud of my quality of sound and song structure in my tracks. My style is still being discovered and aims to combine old school sounds, great songwriting, and modern production techniques, as well as the blending of different EDM subgeneres to acheive something new and refreshing to listeners. My latest release on Apostle Records, is by far my most energetic track and combines metal and dubstep influences.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The goal for the MOYLOM project is to do 3 things. For one, it is to strengthen my relationship with Jesus and help me to put him first. More Of You, Less Of Me (MOYLOM) is based off of a scripture, John 3:30, stating “He must become greater; I must become less” I have had a tough time giving everything over to God. A lot of times I want to just do things how I want to do them rather than give them over to God and submit to him and his will. I think that if God is in control of my life, I will be truly satisfied in my soul and also be able to impact the most people around me in the most positive way possible. Secondly, I want the MOYLOM project to be a positive outlet for my musical abilities and talent. I hope to inspire others with music that is very heavy and melodic and well structured but that also has a spiritual message and undertone to it. There is a lot of potential for CEDM to be just as big and as good if not better than secular EDM. I want to be part of that movement and be able to show just how powerful God’s music can be. And lastly I want the MOYLOM project to bring people together and help those in the secular EDM scene know that there is a God who loves them and wants to have a relationship with them too.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is writing a song that truly reflects what you want to put out into the world and then being able to share it with the world. Hearing my songs live on big sound systems is super fun and it helps me to compare my songs to others in the industry that are very well made. It’s super fun to hear crowd reactions to songs that I have written and see how it makes them feel. Also nailing a mix for a song is super rewarding as well and being able to hear all of the key elements that truly help the song shine as bright as it should.
