Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to ELIAZ. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
ELIAZ, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
For years, I half-assed creativity and I feel like it’s been my biggest set back. Even with going to music school, I wasn’t very focused and I was wildly insecure which didn’t lend well to creating music. Now I’m filming and learning at the same time. I feel like people don’t see the process of learning a skill anymore so that’s the goal right now. It’s been fun taking people through the trials and errors of creating from updating my pictures to creating a Youtube banner for my channel, it’s been a learning curve that I hope people will enjoy.
Looking back I would’ve paid more attention in school particularly in music production and instrument classes. I’ve been quite distracted these last couple years with relationships and insecurity that I let the skill I learnt go so now it feels like I’m relearning those. The obstacles have definitely been mostly mental for me. As I mentioned before, insecurity has wasted a lot my time throughout the years but as I get older, the need to create and share the journey has overcome that more and more.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m ELIAZ ( means the Lord is my God with Hebrew origins) I was born in Cape Town, South Africa and have been around music since I can remember. From going to band practice and theater rehearsal with my mom to singing in the car on roadtrips, music has always been apart of my life. My mom, sister and I would sing in three part harmony for friends while my sister and I would sing at local festivals and showcases. Naturally, the need for music and music creation grew up along with me.
My mom, sister and I moved to the US in 2024 for my mom’s job. We moved to Indiana and was welcomed with a 3 week ice storm which coming from tropical Cape Town was a shock to the system. My sister and I kept singing together and improving our voices with singing lessons and show choir throughout middle and high school. In 2012, my sister and I moved to Nashville for school then our sophomore year, my mom followed us since we loved Nashville so much.
Since becoming a solo artist a couple years ago, it’s taken me some time to cultivate my own sound. My goal went from live performance to now Sync music which is music for films and tv shows. My goal for my sound with a mix of Billie Eilish and Labrinth with these dark pop sounds and sultry melodies.
Currently, I’m taking people along the journey as I learn how to produce, writing and sing my own music with the goal of releasing my first EP in the Spring of next year. As I take people along with me, I show them the trials and successes of taking my own pictures, editing videos, learning music production, and creating my own graphics. It’s an entire learning curve for me so I definitely feel in over my head but it’s been so fun to not only learn but also to finally move in a direction that feels authentic to me and my end goal.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think the biggest thing non-creatives would struggle to understand is just how difficult it is to keep your confidence. For non-creatives, music is something to be enjoyed while for creatives, it’s a push and pull of self doubt and being proud of what you’ve made. . People can be quite dismissive to your music or they’re downright mean about it.
Creating is a constant rotation of discipline, vulnerability and a work/life balance because when does one “clock out” of creating. Creating isn’t just something we do, it’s a large portion of who we are so when someone doesn’t like a song we’ve made, it’s a subconscious rejection of who we are as people. It’s these little pokes that can break down confidence and can really cloud our mental space.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For a long time, I tried to find other ways to feel good about myself or to feel fulfilled in life but after all that, the only thing that makes me feel satisfied when I lay my head on my pillow at night is creating. Creating music, filming the process, editing the videos, learning graphic design for my covers etc. It all leads me to not only have a product to show people but to also learn the skills that I can take to others to help them in the future.
As selfish as it may sound, music has always been about me. For a large portion of my life, it has been about what others thought and felt but now I’m at a point in my life that the only thing that matters is what I think. My music is a reflection of my thoughts, feelings, ideas etc. It’s a platform to finally be 100% authentic whereas in the past, that hasn’t always been celebrated.
