We were lucky to catch up with Eli Yenskii recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Eli thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’ve always been naturally skilled at singing and songwriting. A lot of that came from being in church and watching my mom in the choir. I also watched a lot of musicals growing up, so I was always musically inclined; though I did have a little help when it came to mixing and mastering my songs. I don’t think I could’ve done anything to “speed up” my process because I was taught that it takes 10,000 hours to truly master a skill. There’s no getting around that. I would honestly say that my biggest obstacle as far as learning is concerned has been myself. I’ve had to learn to get out of my own way and seek knowledge, even when people weren’t trying to give it to me. Honestly, with all the technology we have currently available in the world, it’s almost impossible to not learn unless you don’t want to.

Eli , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Eli Yenskii (born Telique Elijah Morris in Staten Island, NY) is an independent American singer-songwriter, entertainer, and producer, based in Atlanta, GA. Yenskii released his first EP entitled, “3/8” in 2019, followed by his most recent releases, “SMOKE”, “12/12” and “SIP”. His genres include POP, R&B, Hip-hop, and Neo Soul.
As a musical theater kid, Eli was exposed from a very early age to multiple forms of vocal, acting, and dance training, which he proudly and fiercely displays in his records and live performances. He is a self taught songwriter and produces all of his music to date.
Eli Yenskii ‘HEAVILY’ promotes freedom of expression, love, and unity for people from all walks of life. He has taken a different approach to creating “feel good” music, mixing sounds like modern day pop/hip hop, accompanied with some classical music styles that include Jazz, Blues, R&B, Rock & Roll, and countless others.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I would definitely say that I’ve had to unlearn toxic self criticism. It’s okay to be somewhat self critical but there was a time recently in my career where this was affecting me putting out content & performing. I didn’t think I was good enough regardless of how many people told me that I was. That was actually the craziest part about it; the fact that no one else was telling me or treating me like I wasn’t. But the self sabotaging voices in my head were really holding me back. I’m grateful to finally be out of that negative space and back to the music
How did you build your audience on social media?
Honestly when it comes to building a fan base on social media, the biggest key is consistency and relatability. Knowing your audience plays a huge hand, and also knowing how the algorithm works at any given time. It’s not easy and it takes time but my advice would be to stay consistent, be relatable, and share engaging and useful content.
