We were lucky to catch up with Eli Moon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Eli, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
I think one of the biggest things about being an artist is that no one truly will know what you go through on a day-to-day basis. From what goes on in my mind to what actually reflects in real-time is quite a lot. I think that’s where my OCD/anxiety/depression plays a big part as I’m a perfectionist at heart: everything needs to align. So as I’m working on these new projects and thinking of what to put out next, there always used to be a wonder of “Will they like it?”. Though I think I’ve gotten better with that over time.
But the reality is you give up certain aspects of your days, weeks and years to put in the work. Performing, making new music, making appearances…it’s all part of being an artist and growing in your craft. That’s something most won’t get, as I’ve sacrificed a lot of time to ensure the world will know who I am.
Eli, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Eli Moon, with me comes a lot of passion and energy. The most important thing about me and my music is I want you to feel included, that you’re worth it. I went through a long spell of depression back in 2019-2020 where I didn’t know what direction I was heading. I was doing the wrong things, just not taking care of myself and not putting in the proper work with music. Finally, I decided to re-route and found myself in the best spot I could be: creatively blessed.
In 2021, there was something special about what NARR8R and I were putting together. Song after song I was truly finding my sound and my brother had a huge part in helping me do so. We started doing more shows and appearances, which built my understanding of what the next steps were. In order to be noticed, not only in Cleveland, Ohio, it was time to apply pressure with every move we made.
When the summer of 2022 hit, NARR8R, King Pala and I created the group Family Ties. It is a collective built on positivity, love and growth with three artists that bring something different to this world. Originally the collective started with four artists but since then the three of us have remained connected as family during our rise. Keep in mind, this won’t be just a phase. Family Ties is the next wave of music.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As I was growing up, I was diagnosed with OCD, Anxiety and Depression. As a teenager. I was shell-shocked. It was a lot to take in because I had no idea how my life would go from that point on. Was I broken? Was it a bad thing? Those thoughts sat with me a lot. It was hard going through those weird years trying to understand how to deal with it, on top of everything else life teaches a young man.
For me, I’m all about Mental Health Awareness. It’s so important to talk to someone when you’re feeling like you need to. Heck, even when you don’t feel you need to. We go through this life dealing with so many emotions and changes that we never slow down and ask for help. I’m grateful I finally did because it helped put me on the path I need to be on. And don’t get me wrong, I’m still not where I want to be. But every day I take a step towards who I want to be as a person.
It’s okay if you need help. It’s okay to ask for help. Remember this: there’s someone out there that waits for your call/text or to see you/hear from you. You are a light in this world. Don’t allow the bad in life to outweigh the greatness life offers. Keep going and keep living.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think the absolute coolest thing about being an artist is interacting with fans. Hearing somebody say that my song inspired them or put them in a good mood, etc., is the best feeling in the world. For as many hours as artists put into their work, it’s sometimes the little things that help us stay creative. The music I make is inspired by things I’m feeling or going through and isn’t warped or fabricated to be something it isn’t. When someone tells me that my song made their day, that’s amazing.
