We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ëli Hills. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ëli below.
Hi Ëli, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’m a visual learner, so i have to see it to believe/know it. So with clipping videos & journaling, that was all something i knew i could do just by simply watching it be done multiple times. If you want to learn something, you will. It’s all a matter of effort. Being freelance creates massive freedom but can also take you in directions you didn’t plan, very fast. A 9-5 would be more stable & routine but with journalism, life is so unpredictable. It should only be done on the fly.
Sometimes it will take your whole entire day to clip, make edits, add music & words. Along with skipped nights out and days where uploads have technical issues for hours. Anybody can do what i do, but there’s just an over saturation which makes it difficult. If you stay original, it’ll all make sense later. Real is hard to come by and the people will appreciate it.
I’ve been making content since 2016 but didn’t have a business then and wasn’t serious or had direction. Late 2024, when i decided to try out a new idea, it fortunately worked within a few weeks. The followers then came rapidly. The process was fast but also finally made the right decision after failing for years. i took a risk & went all in on my idea(s).
Everything you see on social media is me, never had someone upload or help post. i individually have to switch through apps & moderate each post to fit platforms. That takes 4 hours minimum. Posted 6-10 videos a day for weeks straight. Yes it’s time consuming & exhausting but do you want it or not?
Closing, I’d say my work ethic & willingness to learn everyday. Be teachable & pay attention to what’s going on in the world. Every little detail, things others usually wouldn’t pick up naturally. Had to create an edge for someone to follow after.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
All my work is freelance so it’s all about putting yourself in vulnerable positions to exceed. It’ll always work in your favor later but may not make sense in the moment, a lot of inconveniences may happen.
i got into music in 2008 when my uncle wrote my first rap. He was already a rapper but wanted to make a fun song for me, fell in love with it from there. i was a writer up until 2020 when i recorded my first ever song. Why i waited, i don’t know lol but glad i left years of experience.
Journalism has always drew high interest since a kid because I’m fascinated by news, random events & facts. Decided to pursue that in 2020 as well.
Videography/photography/cinematography is second nature for me because it’s also something i eternalized as a child. i love visuals, motion pictures & capturing moments that technically only existed if it’s documented.
i value my work more than life itself, I’m very prideful and it’s not towards anyone else, i just care too much. When i finally present something, it needs to speak for who i am as person during that time. My best self should be forward. i want to bring entertainment & freedom of expression back. Not sure when society decided to be soft.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
If you are not a creative then you aren’t a creator. Leave it to the ones who fight for expression and ideas to be pushed, just be the entertainment for the product or behind the scenes, don’t force what you don’t have.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
