We were lucky to catch up with Eli Gutierrez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Eli, appreciate you joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
When I first started my business my name was “cloud_9_earrings”. I sold handmade clay earrings but after awhile I decided I wanted to expand to beaded necklaces. So I changed my business name to “Dreamy creations.” As my business started to grow even more i wanted something more unique and relatable. I decided on “Overthinker” handmade jewelry. I have been called an Overthinker my whole life. I wanted to turn my flaw into my strength. All of my jewelry is precisely made and I overthink every step of my process. I think it helps me be good at what I do. I really hope people can relate to the brand I created.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello! My name is Eli Gutierrez and I am a Jr in high school. I started my business in 2020 and have been working hard ever sense. I make handmade beaded necklaces as well as a variety of other jewelry items. I try my best to create unique jewelry items. I follow a punk/grunge/emo/acubi style! I started my official website in May and two days ago I received my 300th order! I am very proud of this accomplished!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Ever sense I was little I have always had many interests. Swim lessons, dancing, fashion, musicals, teenage mutant ninja turtles, hello kitty and the list goes on. As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized how much I over load myself and how unproductive it makes me. I tend to sign up for a million things and overwhelm myself. I had to un-learn the “go go go go and never stop” mindset. I had to learn how to not put so much pressure on myself. I used to wonder why my anxiety was so bad and it was because I was doing a million and one things!

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I get a lot of questions on how to grow a following on Instagram. Here are my 5 tips! 1. Create a cohesive brand
2. Post as much as possible
3. Purchase Instagram ads
4. Take good professional product pictures
5. Interact with your audience
Remember it takes time to grow a following! It’s important to have good product pictures please remember that! Post consistently and don’t get discouraged. Results come with time!
