Elham , appreciate you joining us today. Early in your career, how did you think through the decision of whether to start your own firm or join an established firm?

I started my own firm in 2021. After working for other tax firms both big and small in the past I hit a road block. I realized other company’s missions didn’t align with mine. I also came to the conclusion that there was so much more I could offer my clients other than just prepping their taxes. I knew I wanted to educate my clients and provide them with other services that could empower them to understand personal and business finances. At that point I knew I hit a road block and it was time for me to make something happen and pivot. I always dreamed of owning my own business as a kid but never really knew when or how I would accomplish it. At that point in early 2021 I kept getting signs in different ways that it was finally time for me to invest in myself and build my own firm. I kept getting referrals and family and friends telling me I should start my own firm build what I envisioned. I had the knowledge, degree, and experience now it was time to build out a plan, invest and execute. Like many people in the beginning phase of starting a businessI still had the fear of “what if I don’t get clients etc”.
Despite those fears I still followed through and began building my business from coming up with a business name, brand colors, registering my LLC, opening my business bank account. I hit the ground running and I can wholeheartedly say starting my own business was the best decision I ever made. My first year of business I over exceeded my expectations. I was able to build my clientele in a short period of time. The first year there were a lot things I learned. I learned it’s okay to make changes and pivot within your business as you progress and grow. I also learned that it’s important to step out of your comfort zone in order to truly grow.

Elham , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

My name is Elham, I’m an Accountant and entrepreneur. I entered this industry after obtaining my bachelors degree in Finance in 2018. My company Universal Accounting Services provides personal and business tax preparation, small business bookkeeping, payroll and business consulting. I assist my clients with staying compliant with the IRS, understanding the foundations of business and creating/keeping a profitable business.
We assist clients to take the actionable steps to financial success. My company’s main goal is to empower, educate, and assist our clients by prioritizing their financial needs and ensuring they’re financially organized.
Our approach is personable and we meet our clients where they’re at. This sets us apart and creates a comfort zone for our clients. We understand that finances can be an uncomfortable topic at times and we want to ensure clients feel comfortable when being serviced by Universal Accounting Services.

I’m most proud of being a first generation college grad and starting my business. My passion for helping my clients runs deep. My company is here to assist others and ensure they leave us with knowledge, confidence and peace of mind that their finances are in good hands.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?

Social media!! Social media has been key for me. It’s forced me to step out of my comfort zone but in return has allowed me to grow my clientele.

Email marketing. I have started to build a community of people through my website by allowing people to subscribe. We send out IRS updates, free resources and tips and so much more.
