We caught up with the brilliant and insightful EleveN2wenty2 a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, EleveN2wenty2 thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Pursuing music is something the members of EleveN2wenty2 always knew that they wanted to do as individuals. Though they had been singing together since 2011, in 2018 they booked a paying gig together. After that opportunity, more and more inquiries began to pour in and the group decided to pursue music as a group specializing in professional background vocals.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We began singing in church together over 10 years ago on the youth praise team in Kansas City. Through the years, we have had the opportunity to grace many stages outside of church, and have grown in our artistry. For the past four years, we have offered many services, including background vocals and featured performances for various events. We have been able to expand our services to now offer vocal/performance coaching, music business coaching, as well as recording studio services. We feel that being able to offer all of these services sets us apart from others as we are a one stop shop. We are proud of the opportunities that we have gone after and achieved in such a short amount of time of being a group.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Being that we all grew up singing in church, we had to unlearn a lot of taught behaviors. There is not a lot of technicalities in gospel music, so when we all began to classically train our voices, we had to unlearn the idea that those techniques could not be translated to other genres. We learned that it is okay to use proper terminology in our rehearsals and keep up with our classical training even if we are singing an R&B song.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
There was a period in time where our calendar was not filled up. Rather than get discouraged that our books were not filling up, we took some time to re-strategize and brainstorm ways to get ourselves back out there again. We started by hosting our own show for the community and reaching out to other people who had platforms to see if they’d be interested in our services. This proved to be successful as our calendar filled up more than it ever had before and we were able to connect with many local and mainstream artists.
