We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elena Moraru a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Elena, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today.
The thing that I would do differently if I was starting over is I would have more patience with myself and with how life unfolds. I don’t think there is anything that I could have done differently besides that, that could have taken me to today faster. As an interior designer, it takes time to find your identity and as nature does not rush, I don’t believe in forcing this process of discovering your true self in your profession. We need to go though set backs, through deep waters and denial in order to see that what remains is who we truly are. Accepting and understanding your original blueprint as a professional is not an easy task and it takes time. Ultimately we get payed more because we start offering our original selves in our services and authenticity is what we all truly value and appreciate in one another.

Elena, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an interior designer born in Europe with training and experience in US, currently designing residential homes in Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in Texas. In 2010 I moved to America from Moldova, after graduating with a degree in Finance. Coming to the States I knew I had to continue my education in order to become proficient language-wise in a particular industry. Finance did not appeal to me at the time so I decided to go for interior design. I grew up in a society that did not acknowledge and support a creative career choice plus there was really no market for it. Coming to America has opened my possibilities and I started to envision a different future for myself.
I am not your typical interior designer that you find on covers of interior design magazines. First, I am a European country girl with European values and this has been reflected in all my projects over the years. I do not specify product that is not essential to an interior space. I am not the designer that recommends decor just to fill out space. I believe in the beauty and elegance of natural materials and that they can elevate our emotional, psychological and spiritual state. I also think that negative space, like in any form of art, is essential to create a beautiful, functional space. And also, from my own past experience and struggle with anxiety and depression, I look at personal space as a mood enhancer and found that bright rooms, a multitude of windows and a resemblance of nature in interiors help keep our mind healthy and our soul at peace.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In December 2019 my daughter was born and then 3 months after, the pandemic started. At that time I was one year and a half old as a designer entrepreneur. Everything pretty much stopped in my life: work, social life, that sense of safety. It was very easy to just quit but when the Universe wants you to do something, there is really nothing that can defeat you. That moment has taught me a very important lesson: that whatever God has put in your heart, no man, no crisis, no storm can stop it from blossoming.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
In my life, God is using my work to make me happy, to bring moments of fulfillment and joy. As much as I love people and doing great work for them, my work first and foremost feeds me on a very deep spiritual level. I don’t have a one particular goal, my mission is to carry myself through my work as my most authentic self- this way I know that what I create is deeply satisfying for everybody involved.
