We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Elena Davies. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Elena below.
Elena, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
I’ve always felt a bit “misunderstood”, I graduated from Bethesda Christian School in Fort Worth, TX, and while it was an incredible education and foundation for my life, I was always “too much” and simultaneously “not enough”. It took me experiencing academia in college to realize how smart and capable I was because I wasn’t forced into a box or constantly compared to “better” students (and better Christians). I find it incredibly fulfilling that I have made an entire living BECAUSE OF all the things that I was once told were wrong with me. Essentially, I am way more successful than the people who told me I would never be a success. Savage? No. Honest. Most people in a parallel situation would feel similarly but never admit it. Being unhinged and authentic has provided for me! *laughs obnoxiously* I got my “start” on the Kidd Kraddick Morning Show before I moved on to Reality TV and now full time content creation on Instagram, YouTube, and podcast. I created my brand, MiscELENAeous, in hopes to bring laughter, relatability, and empowerment to as many people as possible. I call my listeners and followers “MiscFits” and celebrate uniqueness. I want to be a safe space online where everyone feels loved and accepted.
I know the struggles I faced regarding my self-worth has helped me help others… so, worth it!
Elena, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
*i touched on some of this on the previous slide*
I started on the Kidd Kraddick Morning Show shortly after Kidd passed. He had noticed me on Twitter and thats essentially how I “got my foot in the door”. I wouldn’t be where I was in my life if it wasn’t for Kidd and Kellie Rasberry and I’ll always be so grateful. I moved on to compete on CBS’s 19th season of Big Brother where I lost half a million dollars and won a toxic relationship! Said toxic relationship led me to MTV’s “Ex on the Beach” which only added more toxicity to my life. But, again… these experiences taught me things, offered opportunities, gave me hormonal acne, and are likely part of what sets me apart from other creators.
My brand has evolved a lot over the last seven years. A lot of my content is focused on sex positivity, self-love, kink curiosity and acceptance, as well as feminine health; however, being “MiscELENAeous” gives me so much freedom to talk about… anything! My core purpose has never changed, though; I want to make people laugh and feel loved every single day. I also want to complain and I love attention.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
There are a lot of ways that content consumers can support their favorite creators and people don’t realize the impact they can make by simply engaging with our content, playing a podcast or YouTube video while doing chores, sharing about us online or with friends. Especially with the constant changes on Instagram, my income depends on engagement… if people aren’t engaging with my content, Instagram doesn’t prioritize it on my followers timelines, therefore less people see it which means less people have the opportunity to engage, then Instagram doesn’t push my content to non-followers on the explore page, which only decreases my overall engagement percentage, and this results in less work for less money.
I work really hard on creating fun original and sponsored content but I can’t continue to create original content without the financial support of sponsored content so having followers trust the brands I work with and using my links to purchase is another incredible way to support me (and, of course, other creators). PS: how many times is too many times to say “content”?
Its simple, really… Engage and share!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I have had to face a lot of my life’s biggest struggles very publicly and that adds an incredible amount of stress to an already terrible situation. My break-up, mental illness, business failures, and more… have all been discussed online (often times in great detail) by strangers. I get a lot of unsolicited opinions, death threats, and nudes that I do not want. Privacy is a luxury I may never have. There have been several times in the past I’ve wished that I could go back or give-up… but, I can’t… it’s literally not an option. Sometimes resilience is a brave choice but sometimes resilience is just continuing to exist until things change… because you just have to. Get you a girl who can do both. *winks*
