We recently connected with Elange and have shared our conversation below.
Elange , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Music has been a part of my life since I was three years old. It is my greatest passion and a deep source of inspiration, resonating with me on a spiritual level. My mother, a small business owner and couture designer in the fashion industry, motivated me to pursue an entrepreneurial path. She was the first to notice my good ear for music and guided me by finding a vocal teacher when I was four.
Growing up in Europe, I dedicated all my free time after school to honing my musical skills, prioritizing singing and playing the piano over homework. At eight, I was accepted into a music school and became part of a children’s choir at an opera theater, marking my first professional engagement. This immersion in music was so profound that academic subjects like biology and math seemed insignificant. I knew then that I was born to be a musician.
When I moved to New York City as a teenager, I discovered the world of EDM and street dance. This city and its vibrant music scene fueled my passion even further, pushing me to explore and create within this genre. I immersed myself in the city’s vibrant cyphers and participated in dance battles and jams, shifting my perspective on how music can be expressed and felt. This enlightenment led me to make the bold decision to dedicate myself entirely to music, foregoing traditional education to apply for a certificate program in electronic music production and sound design at Berklee College of Music paired with my internship at Brewery Recording Studio.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
ELANGE is a future of sound where I combine EDM, hip-hop, cinematic tunes and a powerful vocal presence. My creative vision is deeply rooted in futurism, drawing inspiration from science fiction films to craft captivating cinematic visuals. I approach music as storytelling and thoroughly enjoy directing the visuals for my projects. Cinematic approach is the main element of my art as it settles an epic mood and helps to achieve an immersive experience. My intention lies in a creation of electronic music shows where I combine elements of DJing and live performance that possesses a motivation for my listeners. I want them to leave my shows enlightened and recharged.
Recently, I have released my first EDM track called New Horizons. It combines cinematic, house, soul and elements of dubstep. It is an innovative track where I used a sample of a full orchestra from my first release Endless Illusions to make a point about my style transition from soul music to EDM.
New Horizons is about the power of surrendering control and releasing the burdens that weigh people down. I encourage others to find freedom beyond the constraints of time. The lyrics highlight the struggle against doubts and distractions, urging my listeners to transcend these limitations and seek clarity. Driven by personal desires and the pursuit of light, the song portrays a journey of enlightenment, where every step taken is a step towards truth and fulfillment. The song resonates as an anthem for those seeking to break free from societal pressures and embark on a transformative path towards a higher state of consciousness. This summer I am going to release my first music video that was shot in a cinematic manner highlighting a mental struggle that people face in our ever changing world and an ability to release stress through music.
The video shows a typical MTA scene where New Yorkers deal with the craziness of subway life. A tired business professional steps onto the train after a long day and faces the reality of a homeless man peeing on his shoes, making him extremely angry. However, music helps him turn the negative experience into a positive one by giving him a new perspective through a vision he got while he was listening to my track New Horizons.
Of course, behind every artist there is a dedicated team. I am incredibly grateful to the talented individuals who participate in my projects, including street dancers, actors, artists, photographers, filmmakers, and editors. Their support inspires me to push boundaries and achieve even greater heights. I am dedicated to presenting new artists from the creative community of New York city and showcase local and international talents to the whole world.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Being an artist is not an easy path. There are many obstacles and a lot of hard work involved along the way. Few people understand what it actually takes to be a professional in the music industry. It requires long hours without rest, constantly generating new ideas, and staying consistent with this practice. Innovative concepts can pop up randomly, so it’s important to find a balance to avoid burnout. As an independent artist, I have to manage music production, mixing, mastering, distribution, PR, visuals, creative direction, content creation, finances, and more. It is similar to small business owners who must take control of many aspects of their startup.
Managing creatives is also one of the most challenging aspects, as we are often abstract and relaxed, which is necessary for generating creativity. However, structure and a logical mindset are crucial to finalize products and projects. The combination of both aspects is essential, and not many people in our industry can be both creative and logical at the same time.
Being a professional in the music industry seems like a fun job, but in reality, it is one of the most challenging because you work nonstop, purely for the love of your craft. Many musicians have a hard time earning income at the beginning of their careers when they need to establish their brand. The reality is that you have to work many other jobs to support yourself and your music career. I see many artists becoming depressed due to a lack of support, but I believe that the best supporter is you. As long as you are confident and can support yourself mentally, you can overcome these challenges.
Another aspect that holds many musicians back from their goals is an unhealthy lifestyle. It is easy to get caught up in drinking and smoking, which makes it harder to perform in many venues. Long hours and traveling can easily make you feel tired, so it is crucial to eat good food, stay hydrated, and be physically capable of handling numerous live performances.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect as a creative is being able to create my own vision and share it with the world through music, inspiring my listeners. When I see positive emotions on their faces, it’s truly fulfilling.
It’s a privilege to be an entrepreneur and take on leadership roles, guiding other creatives and nurturing talents. Since childhood, I’ve enjoyed thinking outside the box and exploring beyond what was taught in school. Music allows me the freedom to refine my own reality and share it with the world through visuals and music
