We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ejimofor Oruche a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ejimofor, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you take vacations? Why or why not?
Yes, I take vacations. It can be hard to do especially in this particular season when finances are a bit unstable for me. However, I can do my best if I don’t take a rest (didn’t mean to rhyme lol). Also, I don’t want to wait till I get to whatever future point to enjoy time with my family. I think there are a lot of ways to take a vacation. You can do a staycation, you can go somewhere local, or you can do a workcation in a different place that promotes rest. Also rest looks different for each of us. For me I still like thinking about stuff related to my work, but just the fun parts I don’t have as much time for like reading or learning new things. Feeling like I have time to do that is restful for me.

Any advice for managing a team?
I think for me what has worked best is being honest. I think that when my team sees me being vulnerable about where things are they respect and trust me more. I still share the vision we have but now I am creating even more space for them to be a part of making it real. It truly makes it a “we” not “me”.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being our authentic selves. I feel that the people who have resonated with us the most are just like us as people. They feel supported and seen by us and as a result want us to win because they know they will too. That has also helped get rid of people who might be a bad match.
