Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Eileenys Hernandez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Eileenys, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?

When I started out in 2018, there wasn’t really a market for peacock chair rentals. In Tampa, you’d only see a few every now and again at events. I posted an ad on Facebook, and the inquiries just started coming out of nowhere. That’s when I started to find these amazing pieces and began cultivating the Peacock Perch collection. The idea was to have a wide selection of peacock chairs so our clients could have a variety to choose from. It was smooth sailing from there! Early on, I remember an event guest asking, “is this an actual business?”  Hilarious, but we made it into one and we hope to continue expanding on the quality and the selection. We want to be part of our client’s big life event and share the beauty of peacock chairs.  

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Eileenys Hernandez and I’m a mother, wife, healthcare professional, and peacock chair connoisseur.  My passion is helping people and putting smiles on their faces!  Peacock Perch is the perfect medium for me to fulfill that passion.  Getting to be part of our client’s special moments is such an amazing experience.

I live in Tampa, born in New Jersey, and my parents are from Cuba.  I remember as a young girl seeing these huge chairs at the typical “Latina” baby shower.  It wasn’t until I tried searching for a peacock chair of my own that I figured out how hard they were to come by.  When I had my daughter, she inspired me to become a better version of myself.  That inspiration is where Peacock Perch was born.

At Peacock Perch, we provide custom and vintage peacock chairs to enhance our client’s event. There’s something about these chairs the moment you sit in one.  It takes you to a different place and gives you a feeling of empowerment. So, for that bride that’s nervous about her special day, or the client who just needs to relax; these chairs offer that sense of peace and composure…so you can enjoy the moment. I’ve witnessed this change on people’s faces so many times as soon as they sit in one of our chairs!

After seeing the power these chairs have, I began searching for famous artists who’ve been photographed with a peacock chair. I was pleasantly surprised at the number of artists I found online (Instagram @peacockchaircelebrity). I’ve found images of actors from the likes of Charlie Chaplin to Channing Tatum.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

Early on, I tried to market these chairs to brides or to women only. I learned very quickly not to have a narrow lens. Anyone and any kind of event can spark special moments with this statement piece. I’ve also learned that not all clients prefer a peacock chair as their “main” attraction (i.e., bridal table) and that’s okay. These chairs are not always intended for that. Sometimes, just having a peacock chair as a conversation piece can create the best atmosphere (something I think anyone can appreciate when they’re trying to have a good time). If you have a peacock chair at your next event, expect endless selfies and IG photos to go viral!

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?

Funding and initial capital wasn’t very difficult during initial phases of production. A few years ago, you could snag a peacock chair for $100-200 dollars per chair. Because of popular demand, these chairs are well over $1000 for rare and unique pieces. Rightfully so. These chairs are interwoven with unique and careful precision. To build these chairs from scratch takes time, patience, and relentless creativity. My plan is to someday create custom peacock chairs made from top to bottom to truly appreciate the intricacy and artistry that goes into making these one-of-a-kind pieces!
