We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Eiko Watanabe a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Eiko, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
When I was working as a makeup assistant in Tokyo, my mother was diagnosed with cancer.I told her I’ll quit my job as an assistant and moving back to her parents house, but she told me to cherish dream.
Eiko, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I moved to Los Angeles to further my career as a professional from my mom’s rooted for. Currently,I am mainly working on films and short videos that have a storyline. There is still big language barrier. However,I always place emphasis on what the actors want from their facial expressions, movements, etc.,and what I should do .In addition to technical aspects, one of my strengths is that I place great importance on the care of the actors. What make the client from my 18years of experience:hight quality, quick completion is the best way to support other staff at a time-poor site, and that is my most powerful weapon .I can say it.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I really love fantasy movies that make you think about dreams. When I saw Pirates of Caribbean,Alice in Wonderland,Marie Antoinette,I wanted to be able to do makeup with a worldview like this. This movies influenced me to learn special makeup techniques in LA.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
My first makeup job was as a makeup instructor. As the session went on, the students’ faces lit up,they began to think more positively, and even the tone of their voices changed. There,I was blown away by the wonders of makeup, and decided to change my direction and want to become a professional.
