We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ehi Ade-Mabo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ehi, thanks for joining us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
I grew up as a very shy, timid and anxious child, i remember i would never look people in the faces, always run away from crowds, small gatherings or even my own friends who came around, it was very bothersome to my parents who had exhausted all solutions to get me sociable. Later on, i found out that this was a social anxiety disorder and i was not the only one in the world who always wanted to disappear and not be seen. This situation impacted by academics, social life, my ability to get anything done was pretty much hindered since i did not want to be seen, i knew if i kept on this way, i would lose out on a lot of great opportunities. One day, i DECIDED that i did want to be brave, bold, courageous and show up for myself in a way that only i could. I stretched myself, took on volunteer speaking roles and opportunities that allowed me to be present in my campus community. This was probably the most difficult i had ever done but i knew if it kept going, i could pyche myself to believing “i was doing it effortlessly”….day after day, week after week, months and years went by and every single time i have to do something outside my comfort zone i tell myself its a role im stepping into and i did not have to stay in character for longer than i needed to and this is the simple hack i use to show up as a key note speaker, coach and entrepreneur doing hard things daily and showing up for so many others daily.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a speaker, mindset coach and multi passionate business owner, i run a spa and mobile massage companies through out Canada and the U.S. I got into the spa/wellness industry inspired by my passion for wholistic transformation from the inside out. We have a team of registered, licensed massage therapists that provide mobile healing massages to help relieve tension and stress in the comfort of the client’s homes. We solve the problem of parking, traffic, stress and the inconvinience of getting to the spa as the therapists brings the massage to the clients. I am most proud of my flexibility and my ability to pivot in business. I do not believe we should create businesses or situations that prevent us from failing because failing is one of the biggest gifts an entrepreneur can have, in business and life. Building failure proof lives builds situations that drain us of our creativity and innovation. The Mobile spa was birthed as a result of a lot of lessons learned from running the physical spa with overhead costs and other inconviniences that come with running a brick n mortal store.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Managing a successful team entails understanding that each member of the team is first an individual with unique needs, stressors, motivations, desires, goals, dreams and triggers. once you understand this, you will stop trying to necesitate the same behaviours and responses from the team members.
Managing a team requires the team lead to build core values that glue the team together where everyone can agree on, stand on and unite on
Successfully managing a team compels you to pour into the team, appreciate the team, meet the individual and collective needs of the team as well as create very clear standards by which the members of the team agree to abide by whilst respecting their individual unique preferences.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Succeeding as a coach, speaker or entrepreneur requires resilience, grit and the capacity to forget your failures multiple times and show up daily as a consistent fighter. It requires you to believe when you do not see anything happening which can be difficult for a lot of people to do but very necessary for success.
