We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Egypt Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Egypt thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
If I could go back in time I don’t wish I would’ve started it sooner or later. I think I started it right on time. I was a Stay at home mom of 3 girls, an 8yr old, 1yrs old, and a 2month old. Not expecting my business to take off the way it did, I was forced to juggle my children and my business at the same time. I think that was to help prepare me in the future. I know God had bigger plans for me.

Egypt, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Egypt Sha’Dae. I am a mother of 4 beautiful children. I’m from Hughes, AR but currently reside in Memphis, TN. I am the Founder & CEO of Sweet Sins Sugar Shop. I have a passion for creating but most of all creating anything sweet! I enjoy baking, writing, and spending time with family and friends. I’ve always enjoyed baking but I decided to start my business in August 2018. I started out doing Cheesecake Stuffed Apples and once I perfected them, I set goals to learn to make more desserts. Now, I’m doing wedding cakes. Which was one of my top goals. Overall, I specialize in custom cakes and desserts, such as cakes, cookies, cupcakes, and treats. The problems I solve for my clients are most of my clients don’t understand the work that goes into creating something sweet. Some don’t know the difference between buttercream and fondant. Some don’t know what’s edible on a picture they send me to recreate. I answer all the questions they didn’t realize they needed answers to. I’m here to not only bring their vision into somebody sweet and spectacular but I’m here to take the pressure off and make it an easy process. I think that also sets me apart from other people. I’m most proud of myself for continuing to stay the course even when things get bad and ugly. It’s not always as sweet as my desserts but it’s worth it. The main thing I want potential clients/followers/fans to know is I love what I do. I’m human so I make mistake but I’m also a forever student and I know there’s always room to grow. If you’re wanting to start a bakery business and you’re scared because you may not know where to start, my advice is to pray about it and DO IT even if you’re scared! You can follow my business on all Social Media platforms Sweet Sins Sugar Shop.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’ve had to pivot my business, job, children, and personal everyday. I work during the day, get off work to get my kids from school and return home to start on my business as well as be there for my children as well as take time for myself. Only to wake up and do it all over again. Its challenging but it’s worth it.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I started my business using what I already had in my kitchen. I took those ingredients, created a product, sold the product that earned me profits. After I used everything I had in my kitchen, I used my profits to pay for my expenses. Eventually, I noticed I was earning more profit than I had in expenses.
