Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Efua. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Efua, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I have worked on is honestly myself. I have always been someone who is motivated by self improvement. I have always seen myself as a project who is constantly evolving. Working on things like self love, awareness allowed and many other things allowed so many other beautiful things to flow out of me. I always get the question, How are you so happy? Or why are you always smiling? It’s because I truly love myself I love my life. I love my family and I have so much to be grateful for.
When you’re coming from a state of abundance, then so much more beautiful things can come from that. I believe that this is the reason why I’m able to make such vulnerable music about the things that I’ve been through. Yet compartmentalize that and be happy in my every day life.
The most meaningful music project that I’ve ever worked on has to be ” The Love Project “which I released in 2021.
It was so meaningful because it was about the greatest thing on earth, which is love. And to write it I had to explore so many different types of love, whether that be maternal, brotherly love , romantic, love, and the unconditional love of God. The project taught me so much about my views on love and how important it is to me and really reminded me and everybody who listen that love is all it’s about.
Efua, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
From the age of three, I knew what my purpose was. I would be in preschool singing songs in class and my teacher would tell me that I was disrupting the class and tell my parents as well. That’s when I first realized that I was a singer. Growing up overweight with a severe speech impediment killed my confidence. So it was hard for me to show people my true self or express how I was feeling. Singing was the only time that I did not stutter. Over time I got rid of the stutter with speech classes, prayer and my family as a support system. I was able to speak clearly but by that time music and singing had been so firmly implanted in me that I knew it was my calling. In 2018 after the passing of my grandmother and father I realized that life is short, and I need to take control of my life. I lost 180 pounds which gave me the confidence to pursue my music career with full force. Over the last five years as a professional singer, I have had so many amazing opportunities by God’s grace. In 2022 I won Afro Pop song of the year at the Ghana Music Awards USA for my hit single “Follow My Dreams pt.3 ” ft Manhakim which changed my life. I’ve had the opportunity to sing with and collaborate with many of the greats domestically and internationally like Joe Mettle, Samini, Mog Music, Sefa, And Tiffany Evans as well as so many more. Because of all the favor of God and the grace that I have seen. Even though being an independent artist these days is not easy I know that I would not trade this journey for the world this is where my heart is. I aim to inspire young women especially and let them know that they are worth following their dreams and their flaws do not define them. My music is beautiful, melodic, inspiring, and centered around confidence, loving yourself, loving others.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In my view, society can best support artists by giving them opportunities at every level. Throughout my journey as an artist, I’ve met so many that were insanely talented, but just didn’t have the resources, connections, or know how to promote themselves. I believe if we as a society can come together and list of people, even when they are just starting, it will give them the motivation to keep going. I know so many artist who stopped making music because it was too expensive or because they felt like they weren’t good enough because they weren’t getting validated. I know that it’s not possible for everybody to help each other monetarily, but a like, a post, a re-share is free and not hard to do. There are several times where I wanted to quit or somebody re-posting my song made me continue to push because it made me feel like I was at least affecting one life. If we can all have the mindset of supporting artist before they get extremely known, I believe that we will all get to the point where they are extremely no because they will have the motivation to keep pushing.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the impact that my music makes. I’m sure it’s no secret these days. That being an independent artist is not easy and it’s extremely expensive. But the reward is much greater than the sacrifice. I can’t tell you how rewarding it is to drop a song and see somebody’s reaction to it or see how it help them through the moment. I see it as I am making the soundtrack to peoples lives . When people come back and affirm that for me and show me that my work is helping them through their every day life it’s so rewarding. To see young girls seeing themselves as beautiful because of my music is amazing. To see people healing over the wounds of losing a loved one, because I was so honest and vulnerable in my music means the world. Or when I’m at a show, and I see people singing along to my lyrics with pure happiness on their face when I know that life is tough sometimes it gives me pure joy. The fact that I have an outlet is a reward overall so yes it is hard and there are some obstacles sometimes but I wouldn’t trade doing this for the world.
