We were lucky to catch up with Effy Hamm recently and have shared our conversation below.
Effy, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am very happy with my modeling! I do work a regular job on the side. There has been times that I’ve thought about slowing down with modeling and focusing full time on my regular job but I feel I wouldn’t have the feeling of self fulfillment. I aspire to do modeling full time and I understand the steps to archive that. I feel very comfortable where I’m at currently with my modeling because I am doing what I love to do and also making a living with it but also continuing to have that balance of having a regular job so I don’t get overwhelmed with being a freelance model.

Effy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Effy. I started modeling back in 2014 as a internet site model. Surprisingly my stuff blew up and when I turned 18 I was able to start officially modeling. My first official shoot was when I was in college and it was just a waterfall scene. When I was 18 I also signed with Suicide Girls and became a hopeful. I think what sets me apart from other models in the community is I am part of the afro punk community and a lot of people are surprised by that because it breaks social norms. With that being said I feel it is what I’m most proud about, being able to be an example that you can express yourself and don’t have to worry about what people think of you. Just being your genuine self will go far.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The resources I wish I knew earlier in my creative journey is model safety and contracts. When I first started my modeling journey I would shoot with anyone just to mass get my name out there but the result of that was some of the photographs were not professional at all and put me in sketchy situations. I didn’t have a manager and was doing everything on my own. I then reached out to some safety groups to help learn more about verified photographs and learned how to write my own contract ensure both parties are safe and under the same agreement with who owns the rights to what and what all I am comfortable doing.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I feel the most rewarding of being a model is knowing people look up to me. Knowing that people follow my journey and are cheering me on and supporting me even on days when I feel I’m not doing the best.
