We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Edwin Chung. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Edwin below.
Edwin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
I would say the first dollar I earned as a creative was when I was given free product. Not too glamorous, but the moment was monumental for me. I’ve been editing for years as a hobby but something changed after I had my first child. I didn’t just want to share regular home videos of my child but I wanted to create some more memorable and magical.
My plan was to incorporate my love for vfx and editing transitions in these videos with the little guy. As I got more into the short form VFX video world, I started growing a small following. During this time, I saw a more established creator that was an ambassador of the Joby brand. (a brand that makes gear for video creators).
In that moment I decided to reach out to Joby and email them to create content featuring their products. To my surprise they agreed to send me something but I was still skeptical. When that package actually arrived, it was in that moment I felt I had earned my first dollar as a creative.
Edwin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Father of 2 boys who makes creative videos to organically feature brands and products. I specialize in magical style videos that surprise and entertain!
Ever since I was a teenager, I have always enjoyed making videos. It first began as compilations of my friends and I doing martial arts tricks. From there, I had fun making vacation recap videos incorporating different editing transitions of my wife and I. After having our first child, I started experimenting with VFX effects to add some magic to our those home videos.
After that I started growing a following and soon after brands found me to do sponsored work. It has snowballed since to a true business for me. The business provides mostly creative video edits that are either posted to my socials or to the brand’s socials as UGC. The main problem I solve for my clients is delivering their brand or product messaging through non-ad like creative videos. What sets me apart is the balance between a professional look while still keeping within the artist social media space. My work is best served to create and build brand awareness. The main thing I want potential clients, followers and fans to know about me is my creativity.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My particular mission is to create entertain first brand videos.
What drives me to make videos that make you want to rewatch it for its creativity even if its an ad!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being creative is that “Ah Ha” moment when things start to come together in production process. This happens in the editing room, where you are piecing together all the puzzle pieces you have filmed.
